Live Freeways goes Wild

July 9 at 11:00 am

“You’ve heard of the Dead Freeways Ride exploring the Portland freeways we’ve never built or removed entirely, but what about all the freeways that did get built? Did you know that the majority of Portland and Vancouver area freeways are legally open to bikes and non-motorized vehicles? Much like State DOTs during the freeway building era of the 20th Century, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed many levees for “flood protection” that negatively impacted natural flood plains and wildlife migration patterns around them. Steigerwald Lake Wildlife Refuge is one local example where levees have recently been removed to restore these important wetlands.”
