Biking to Timbers soccer games is already a thing. And you know we love us some Bike to Blazers. Now it’s time to show the Portland Pickles some velo-love.
The Pickles might not be major league, but their games are major fun. And next Tuesday night (7/30) is the perfect time to ride to the park and check them out.
Based at the wonderful Lents Park in southeast Portland, the Pickles have made fans out of many for their accessible games and venue. With tickets as low as $8, it’s much cheaper than at night watching the Blazers or Timbers. And it’s much more chill. Just roll up with your bike and take it all in. The I-205 path is just a block from the field.

Next Tuesday July 30th Bike Gallery is sponsoring “Bike to the Walk” night (“Walk” is short for Walker Stadium). The Pickles will host the Walla Walla Sweets and game time is 7:05.
Portland Design Works is hosting a bike ride to the game. Meet up with them at The Beer Bunker in Montavilla (7918 SE Stark St) at 5:00 pm to hang out and then ride to the park at 6:15 via the I-205 bike path.

I’m all for encouraging more people to bike to events like this, but will the city be providing more than the four bike staples that are at the park currently for the event? If not, then this is a great opportunity to ask for better bike parking at Walker Stadium.
I’m for more bike parking, my 4 (5?) bikes lack the 3 public parking spaces per each that private motor vehicles enjoy. Or whatever it is. While we wait for that, some tactics: Go with friends and lock your bikes together around a signpost, with a cable thrown in for good measure. Go with a group and pigpile your bikes. Lock your bike in front of the security camera that’s bound to be somewhere within a block. Use a secure lock with flexible links, or go fully urban and use a dollar-an-inch chain and a twenty dollar padlock. Disinterested plug for Winks Hardware. If non of these seem valid for you, perhaps get an event bike with everything bolted on and a bunch of stickers?
We attended a Pickles game earlier this season. Very family friendly and a lot of fun. But, so many bikes just locked up to the chain link fence. I hope they have a better “parking” plan for this event.
Yeah I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving my bike locked up in that neighborhood while thieves knew I probably wouldn’t be back for a few hours. If they really want to do a bike to the game night a bike valet would be a good idea.
