This morning on Twitter we asked our friends if they were still riding through the snow and ice. It was great to see all the responses. People shared photos and tips about how they fared.

banerjek: Icy and bumpy but enjoyable due to quiet and fresh air. The few drivers, cyclists, and peds were all using their heads and playing well together. As such, the commute was probably safer than normal.
@pyszkam: Good ride through NE early this morning. Some bike lanes just snow, most others covered with ice chunks from plows. Roads had ruts and were icy, but no problem with studs. Had to take the lane but traffic was light.

And thanks to the PPB Bike Theft crew for sweeping the streets for bike theft crimes…as thieves don’t let a little snow slow them down…as it might actually create more opportunity to steal bikes left downtown overnight due to the snow!

Yes, yes, yes! I took the 4″ fat-tire bike out today and had zero traction issues. It was easier getting speed on the main roads with the ruts and cleared sections but the side streets and trails were a blast!
2+” fresh powder w/ no car tracks in west hills for ZooBomb MBW Sunday nite! Tues PM commute a bit wet w/ big snowflakes, Wed AM icy and rutted sidestreets; otherwise haven’t had problems thanks to studded tires from BikeTiresDirect, right here in PDX!(honestly, not a paid advert..everyone with regular tires did fine on Sunday nite too!).
Looking good. Been wondering about studded tires for the road bike for a while now that I live in an icier/snowier clime than Portland. Seems like the next step. Cheers.
They’re wonderful. Granted, I still didn’t make it down my block on Wednesday, because I don’t have the balance to handle the ruts and ridges, but even I can handle sheet ice with them. If I have to stop and try to give the little push with my foot that I usually start with, then I realize just how little traction there is. Studs are great. (And I got mine from Universal, but they had to be ordered.)

I biked in today and found the SW waterfront in great condition — much better than last year. The weather probably contributed to it but other bikeways were in worse condition. Jonathan, are you aware whether PBOT / Parks & Rec removed snow or applied salt at the SW Waterfront? If so they deserve kudos because this is such a crucial part of the bike network.
Now all that’s left are bike lanes full of gravel, I wonder how long it will take the city to clean up the mess this year? Poll anyone?
