Wednesday Video Roundup: Mountain biking the world, a garage race, cool cargo bike, and more

[Publisher’s note: Yes we know it’s Thursday. Sorry. – Jonathan]

Welcome to this week’s roundup! Our first video (above) shows current research into reusing front derailleurs now that the 1X systems are gaining in popularity. What’s your favorite reuse of this component?

How about the Brompton World Championships? They were at Sea Otter Classic (at Laguna Seca). I assume there’s overlap between Brompton racing and SSCX.

This was a Czech event called Garage Race, which appears to be a race through a parking garage with the least traction possible. It could have been titled “fixie lowsides 2016”. Entertaining, though.

This 1939 bicycle safety video was just put on Youtube. Grab some popcorn and watch. “Motorists are careless, fellas. They’ll hit you.”

Switzerland. Singletrack.

The Swiss trip continues. It’s so pretty it’s worth devoting to this series.

And more Switzerland. This is the last one (for now).

Staying on the Euro mountain biking theme, we can go a little west into France to watch this video. I like the more lush terrain, it reminds me of the Olympic National Forest.

How about mountain biking somewhere that is drier? This Cannondale video shows a bunch of riders kinda goofing around in Hurricane, Utah. (pronounced “herkin”, in southwest Utah, near St. George)

If we go farther south, we can watch mountain bike racing in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Now for a change of location and topic- I love that PBOT is uploading videos occasionally. There was a recent video showing a sinkhole repair. Note they encounter old streetcar tracks. (PBOT also put up a Better Naito video, which has been covered on bikeportland already)

Clever Cycles is discussing a tandem/cargo bike combination. It’s a little strange-looking, but this would be useful for larger kids, perhaps?

How about road race bikes? Road bikes meant for rough roads are often introduced during the Spring Classics. Here’s a roundup of the current crop of Classics bikes. (also, lots of talk about Trek’s new bike)

Youtuber Kym went alleycat racing in Bogota, Colombia. She says it’s heavier traffic than Mexico City. If you really like or really hate unsafe bike riding, this video’s for you.

Amstel Gold race

It’s been over a week, so some spoilers for the Amstel Gold race follow. First is the CyclingTips “how the race was won”, which is always a great recap:

Taking everyone by surprise, Gasparotto won, dedicating it to his teammate Demoitie, who died after a motorbike crashed into him. Alsos see OGE’s video for Amstel starts with several minutes of Paris-Roubaix.

Fleche Wallone

It’s been exactly a week since Fleche Wallone, so there are spoilers in here. Both the women and the men had their races up the Mur de Huy. Here’s the official recap of the mens race. During the neutral rollout, Trek rider Fabio Felline had a freak crash, fracturing his skull and nose. There are some comments that he was “adjusting something”, I freeze-framed it and found the image below the video where he’s reaching his front axle, and there’s speculation he got his fingers or hand stuck in the wheel. The front wheel stopped instantly. (backup link to twitter video in case the youtube link goes away)

Here’s the Womens race:

There’s also the OGE team recap of the race.

Liège Bastogne Liège

LBL was in the last weekend. Here’s the official preview video; if there are interesting highlights I’ll put them in next week’s post.

Here’s a video of the Tinkoff team training on the LBL roads:

Honorable Mentions

This week’s honorable mentions: Scottish photographer Sandy Carson talking about ‘Cycling, Cameras, and Cats’, introducing the Scott Solace, their ‘cobbles bike’, quick-thinking Polish cyclist chases down some muggers short video of Mayor Charlie Hales on the Smart City Challenge (this begs for some creative remixing), WBW shows a Boba Fett and Stormtrooper themed helmets, race mechanic truck tour, UCI MTB World Cup: DHOMens XCO Womens XCO, Willamette Week journalist Lizzy Acker operated a pedicab for an evening (read the article too), DCRainmaker testing the Airdog drone in follow-me mode, muddy mountain bike racing in France, riding beautiful terrain in Spain and mountain bike racing in Africa.

Inclusion criteria: If I’ve missed something, post it in the comments! I prefer videos published in the last week or so. Note if there’s a specific point in a long video that is worth highlighting. Also note if there is colorful language. I will delay videos containing pro racing spoilers by 7 days.

Had to go back and freeze the video to grok the dude who seems to have gotten NH5D confused with the WNBR. Got a kick out of the “DUDR” share the road plate under his armpit. (Mine’s DYZH, which I coincidentally parked next to DYHZ once). Anyway, I should get back to work and stop rambling.

So in 1939, the hand signal for a right turn was the same as for a left turn?!

Also that cargo/tandem seems to be on the verge of getting a pinch flat: The contact patch on the rear tire is huge.

It does at first look like that…but on a second look they are doing two different arm positions: Stop/ Left turn (left arm pointed lower) and Right turn (left arm pointed higher).

These historical … non-automotive …hand gestures are still seen a lot in the Netherlands. Our “modern” US bike signalling gestures make more sense for drivers hand signalling out of a car window, thus the reason for bent arm up or bent down…easier to differentiate at higher speed and thus at greater distance…and comfort of hanging out of an old boxy car/ truck door.

Awesome lineup this week, thanks! I want to learn to bike like Bobby so that I can live to drive a car when I grow up.

Too much fun with the garage race video…now you kids understand why the garages have those signs “no riding bikes” to the bike parking areas. Duh 😉

All that race needs for next year are a bunch of hay bales and more sponsorships.

If the CoP / County lets Red Bull take over our river for Flu-tog events then why not let a sponsored bike race take over a Smart Park Garage during some wet week of the year [that needs more tourist dollars in town to fill hotels bars and shops]. Or a PSU garage (Mr. I S any thoughts?).
