Your weekend could look like this.

I could not be happier that the weekend is coming. Not only because the forecast calls for warmer temps and lots of sunshine, but because I’ve been sick all week battling a head cold that I just can’t shake.

Enough about me… What are your big biking plans? We’ve got a great mix of offerings on the menu below. Take a look, make some plans, and have a great weekend!

Friday, March 21st

Columbia River Cycling Team Movie Night/Fundraiser – 6:30 pm at Velo Cult (1969 NE 42nd Ave)
Get to know the region’s newest youth bike racing team then kick back and watch the classic bike film, “Breaking Away.” The screening will happen in Velo Cult’s posh, 45-seat theater and there’s a $5 suggested donation to get in. Money raised will help pay race fees and other expenses for Team CRC’s growing roster of up-and-coming racers! RSVP to chrisbrannen@yahoo.com. More info here (FB).

Saturday, March 22nd

Rickey’s Populaire – 9:00 am at Cornelius Pass Roadhouse (4045 N.W. Cornelius Pass Rd. in Hillsboro)
Join the Oregon Randonneurs for this 100k “populaire.” If you have never tried randonneuring, this ride would be a perfect introduction. The route is in Washington County. Show up at 8:00 to make sure you take of registration before the start. More info here.

MTB Group Ride – 10:00 am at Velo Cult parking lot (behind 1969 NE 42nd)
This is a weekly carpool meetup that heads out to mountain bike trails. This week’s destination is a local favorite: Gales Creek/Brown’s Camp. “No guides. No support. Just fun.” reads the ride description. After the ride, they’ll meet back at Velo Cult for “beers, bullshittin’ and take-out.”

PDX Tandems Open Ride – 4:15 at Brooklyn Park (SE 10th and Haig)
If tandems are your thing, this monthly ride of the PDX Tandems group is for you. They plan to meet at the park then ride around town for “a few hours.” Since the leaders have an old, red Schwinn, it’s safe to assume this ride will be very fun and social. Expect to stop somewhere along the way for food and drinks. More info here.

Sunday, March 23rd

Open Shop Night – 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Citybikes (SE 8th and Ankeny)
Learn to work on your own bike with the helpful guidance of trained mechanics. If you already know what to do, use Citybikes’ tools to get your project done. More info here.

Tour de Portlandia – 1:00 pm at Peninsula Park (N Rosa Parks Way and N Kerby)
This is a ride put on by Women on Wheels, a local group organizing on Meetup.org that aims to get more, well, women on wheels. The theme behind this ride is to check out some of the infamous locations of favorite Portlandia episodes and get excited for the upcoming season. Riders are encouraged to dress up like their favorite character from the hit TV series. More info here.

What happened to the tweed rides? No interest? No organizers?

One detail about the weekly mtb ride getting launched from Velo Cult every Saturday, it is *not* a beginner-friendly ride. This is an intermediate/advanced ride group. This will be the third week, and the ride will evolve based on the participants. We haven’t had a public, weekly group ride for a couple years now, and we aim to change that. Show up, bring a car or cash for gas and beer, and lets rock. If you end up in my car I hope you like heavy metal. \m/\m/

What group and/or who leads the MTB Rides from Velocult? I know someone that would be interested for sure! I don’t see any contact info for it listed.

There is no leader. It’s a show up and ride kinda deal. Be there at 10am, decide what to ride, drive to the TH and ride, then back to VC for beers and/or food.
*Tomorrow the ride has been pre-planned to be the Gales Creek CG up to the Brown’s Camp loop so people know what to expect (about 3 hours of int/adv riding).
Once the weekly ride is established the trail for the day can be determined in the morning on the day of (there could even be separate groups heading out to separate trails), or a communication system can be hashed out to pre-determine the ride(s). These details will be figured out by those who show up.
Hope this all makes sense.
Cheers!
