Weekend Event Guide: Bob Roll, Mini Bike Olympics, Gateway Green, and more

Thanks to Hopworks for
making this feature possible.

This is going to be a big bike weekend. With the recent storm keeping many off their bikes, we have a strong hunch that the events and rides in this week’s guide will see strong attendance. (And as a bonus, check out what’s happening tonight in the Mid-Week Event Guide posted on Tuesday.)

Sponsorship message ahead… Before you head out, please think about supporting the excellent brewpubs and beverages created by Hopworks Urban Brewery. They’re not only a solid local company that cares about bicycling; they have also stepped up in support of BikePortland and they make this event guide possible each week.

Friday, February 14th

A Romantic Evening with Bob Roll – 5:00 pm at Western Bike Works (1015 NW 17th Ave)

Head over to Western Bike Works’ in-shop cafe and lounge to meet American road cycling legend Bob Roll. “Bobke” will show up around 7:00 to chat and do a Q & A session. If you haven’t already, watch the hilarious promo video WBW made for the occasion. More info here (FB).

Zoobomb Mini Bike Winter Torch Ride – 7:00 pm at Vera Katz statue on the Esplanade
Join your fellow small bike loving friends for this ride (which I assume involves bright lights and/or fire) which is part of the four-day Mini Bike Winter festivities. This ride will end at the Midnight Mystery Ride (see below). More info here.

Midnight Mystery Ride – 11:30, ride leaves at midnight from 1625 SE Woodward
Always fun and a Portland institution, the MMR leaves at midnight and then rolls en masse to a mystery location where good times can be had by all. More info here.

Saturday, February 15th

River View Natural Area Work Party with NW Trail Alliance – 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Join off-road cycling advocates at Northwest Trail Alliance to put in some sweat equity at Portland Parks’ River View Natural Area. This newly acquired parcel has long been a place for cycling and advocates are working with Parks to improve the trails and increase access. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Mary Verrilli at mary.verrilli@portlandoregon.gov. More info here.

We Love our Parks! Bike Ride – 10:00 am at Fanno Creek Brewpub (12562 SW Main St in Tigard)
This ride is a family-friendly 8.5 miles that will stop at several parks and highlight newly paved sections of the wonderful Fanno Creek Trail.

Zoobomb Mini Bike Winter – All day
Today is the big day. It’s time for Chariot Wars, the annual event that pits bicycle-bound gladiators against one another in a duel to the (near) death. The day starts with brunch, then a ride to the Chariot Wars’ secret location, then a “Big Ass Party” will round things out. This is a must-see event. To get a flavor of what to expect, see our coverage of the 2012 edition. More info here.

Zwickelmania By Bike – 11:00 to 4:00 pm

The 6th annual Zwickelmania brewery tour is a great opportunity to sample the fine beer made right here in Portland. And doing it by bike is an obviously fantastic way to take it all in. Our friends at Ride With GPS have put together a custom map and GPS file that you can use to find your way to all the stops.

Gateway Green Open House – 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Growing Gateway EcoDistrict Office (1111 NE 102nd Ave, Suite F)
The folks behind the Gateway Green project have been hard at work on their plans and designs and now they want your feedback on how things are shaping up. This project will build a new network of bike trails and a bike skills park on a 38-acre parcel in east Portland where the I-205 and I-84 meet. More event info here.

Sunday, February 16th

Yoga at Gladys Bikes – 10:00 am at the shop (3808 N Williams, Suite 132)
This will be a 1.5 hour class tailored to bike riders and suitable for beginners and still helpful for advanced yoga practitioners. Mats will be provided and the class will be led by April Streeter. Fee is $10 and please RSVP to hello@gladysbikes.com if you plan to attend. More info here.

Zoobomb Mini Bike Winter Olympics, Cupcake Challenge, and more
The antics continue in this last day of the 2014 MBW. The Winter Olympics begin first at Laurelhurst Park, then the fun moves to the Esplanade where folks will launch themselves into the Willamette. Then later in the evening, it’s time for some traditional Zoobomb action on The Hill. More details here.
