Planet X is based in England and opened its North American headquarters in Portland last year. We profiled them back in March as they were just settling into their 10,000 square foot warehouse and showroom. The location on Hancock (just east of Williams Ave) is home to several other bicycle-related businesses including Portland Design Works, the Community Cycling Center, and Bike Farm.

Rodarte says he has filed a police report and a notice on Facebook and Craigslist. Keep your eyes peeled. If you see any of these bicycles call Planet X at (503) 894-8956 or the PPB North Precinct at (503) 823-5700 (reference case # 14-3068.

UPDATED, 6/27/14: KPTV reports that these bikes have been recovered! See the full story here.

I’m sorry to hear this 🙁 I’m hope that their insurance covers this.

If only the thieves would have stolen an auto then the PPB might have cared.

Ironically, the Whippet will be sold on the street to buy whippets. Hope the items are recovered.

Bikes costing nearly 10 grand? Its a bike. Get a motorcycle. Bikes shouldn’t cost that much.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but, No one ever breaks into a place like Bike Farm.

The reason that one is so high is that it was a prototype of a bike soon to be released, and it had SRAM XX1 on it. That groupo alone is ridiculously over priced from SRAM.

$350 for a cassette:

The funny thing is they took the fixie!

That cassette is not overpriced. Currently, each cassette has to spend something like 7 hours in a CNC machine to become a finished product. I bet SRAM is making very little off the cassettes.

Also, a full 2×10 XT “groupo” cost more than an XX1 and that isn’t even Shimano’s highest level build kit.

Do the math son.

Why shouldn’t they cost that much? How much should they cost? Why should I buy a motorcycle?

I’m not sure what conclusion you want me to draw from the fact that you think thieves only steal from places that sell high end bikes.

Community Cycling Center was burglerized last year. Not just 10K steeds getting filched.

The tech that goes into a bike to make it light and strong is expensive. The amount of force that a sub-30 lb mountain bike has to take is pretty great and the materials needed to make a bike that light are expensive.

Moto’s aren’t even really using carbon fiber to build frames and the ones that have come out have been _really_ expensive. The suspension technology is also just as expensive as it uses mainly the same tech, but also has to be much lighter. The pivots and rear suspension design also have greater implications on riding bicycles and are guarded more heavily (from what I can tell).

In the end, bikes will cost as much as the market can support and the market can support $10k bikes.

But they do cost that much if that is price range of the bike you are looking for. There are also very many brands that offer bikes in that price range. So if all those big bike companies have those for sale, and are still big companies that measure profits in the tens of millions, what would that tell you? That those customers wanted those bikes, and not a motorcycle.

I’ve seen a record player that cost $45,000, installation not included, and personally bought a motorcycle for $10. It is all relevant. If they will buy ‘it’, sell ‘it’ to them.

Also, what are you going to steal from Bike Farm? I don’t think they have any new product that costs more than $50 which means you could get about $5 for it on the street. Also, it’s location is nowhere near any type of dependent drug hot spot so the average quick cash type of thief would need to travel out of the area that is useful to his dependency simply to boost lights and other assorted accessories from a place like Bike Farm. This doesn’t make sense.

Bike Farm also does not have the type of stuff that a thief would want to break in at night and get, so that is out too. No one is going to risk felony B & E for a score that doesn’t go into the thousands and anything used in the bike industry that is going to garner thousands on resale is not in Bike Farm. I love Bike Farm by the way. I just wanted to point out the incorrectness in your hypothesis.

Adam… You are not alone in that thought… Our “security” company is reviewing the activity log for our account… I am VERY interested in their findings.

They didn’t remove a plate glass window, did they? Here’s hoping the merchandise is recovered & the perps are disemboweled, ritually.

What a trajedy. Hope insurance is on your side.

Interesting note, the thieves, like me, seem to prefer 26″ wheeled MTB’s.

Down with 27.5! Save the 26!
