The Bike Rack, a bike repair shop located in a food cart pod right off the Springwater Corridor path, is up for sale or rent.
The Bike Rack opened in July 2011 when owner Lee Hansen set up shop at “bicycle-centric” Cartlandia, a fledgling food cart pod along SE 82nd Avenue and the Springwater (near SE Harney). Hansen has another full-time job and doesn’t have time to run the shop anymore says Cartlandia co-owner Carol Otis.
Otis says the shop is in great working order, with employees at the ready and a steady stream of customers. “He is sorry to not be able to keep going.” Otis adds that there’s another building on the property that could be added to the bike shop.
Hansen has listed his 8 x 18 foot trailer and full complement of bike repair tools on Craigslist for $8,000. Here’s the listing:

With employees “at the ready” you would think he would work out a contract with them to keep it open. Especially with a low sale price like that. I wonder if the space rental cost is a bit excessive?

I’m disappointed to hear the news. It would be great if the shop could stay at Cartlandia. The Springwater is a pretty busy commute route and it gets really busy on weekends during nice weather. Seems like someone should be able to make a go of bike parts and repair shop in that location. I would have stopped by more often if they were open during the normal evening commute time.
I love how Cartlandia has given people a reason to ride the Springwater farther out. When guests would come to portland, we used to just ride to Oaks park, or maybe to the Johnson Creek area. But now, we’ve got a destination ahead with food and beer!
