Correction: Bikes still free on Canby Ferry

Please note an important correction on a story I reported last week

Not all of the three Willamette River ferries will begin charging bike-riding passengers $1 to ride. The Canby Ferry — operated by Clackamas County — will remain free.

This morning I heard from Ellen Rogalin, Community Relations Specialist for Clackamas County. Rogalin wanted to everyone to know that they’ve never even considered raising the bike fee and they have no plans to do so in the future.

The other two Willamette River ferries — Wheatland and Buena Vista — are run by Marion County and both require a $1 fee for biking passengers as of August 5th.

I regret the error in my story and apologize for any confusion it caused.

Thanks for the update!

In the last article several folks mentioned that they had “favorite” rides that go through the area and utilize one or both of the ferries down there.

Anyone want to share routes? Links to routes on map my ride, ride with gps, or strava are great.

Yay, a useless thumbs down with no other information. Awesome bit of feedback, there! /sarcasm

I’ve seen a few articles where all of the comments have a “dislike” tally of greater than zero, even when there are no “likes” yet. I wonder whether some sad soul is spending their day clicking thumbs down on as many comments as possible, or whether it’s a bot that is following links.

Yes, there seems to be a thumbs down troll. My guess, mainly for this article, is there is a fine Clackamas citizen who also had the thumbs down for helping to pay for the Sellwood bridge.

And just to clarify, the Buena Vista Ferry started bike tolls on 8/5, but the Wheatland Ferry is not charging until 9/1.

This is a good call by Clackamas County. Yeah the ferry costs money to operate, but there’s no way the tolls on cars or motorcycles pay the way. Therefore, taxpayers pick up the rest. Making the ferry free to cyclists encourages them to use it, which takes cars off the roads, and is of far greater benefit to Clackamas County than the toll revenue.

I biked across the Wheatland ferry yesterday (Sunday) and I did see the sign on the ferry saying bikes $1 but I was never asked to pay. I thought it was starting in Sept so I wasn’t expecting to pay. There was a sign (I got a photo of it) asking people to call a number with comments about the new fee. It seems to go to the Board of Commissioners. So someone wants bikers to complain.

I would be happy to pay a buck to ride the ferry.
I rode the Canby ferry and the Wheatland ferry twice on Sunday. On one trip on the Wheatland there were only bicycles.
It adds a great deal of charm to cross the river on a boat rather than another featureless bridge.
I might call the number on the sign, not to complain
but to thank them for offering the service.
