Snowy commute open thread

Reader pic: Snow in the hills on
Science Park Road near Highway 26.

It’s been snowing this morning throughout Portland. Did you ride this morning?

Just thought I’d put this post up so you could share about the conditions in your neck of the woods.

It looks to be sticking now up here in North Portland. I’m headed south down toward the Broadway Bridge. Check back in an hour or so for some fresh and snowy photos. Please chime in below with your snow report…

UPDATE: It’s more wet than white out there now (at least in Northeast). Not the big white dump of snow I was hoping for… But It’d still be fun to hear the weather report where you are…

As we often find ourselves saying during weekends on Mount Hood: I’d rather have warm snow than cold rain!

When I left this morning it was a snow rain mix but nothing was sticking. That was at 6:30AM in SE.

Endured freezing rain all the way to work…and then it turned to nice fluffy snow.

Should have slept in 10 more minutes.

Rode, but should have bused. Yucky out.

Yes, yucky. Perfect temp for keeping my glasses fogged all the way in. Not slick, just stingy sleety precipitation. Fluffy snow would have been preferred.

N. PDX to Vancouver over the I-5 bridge thru fort vancouver, beautiful ! wet fluffy flakes but nothing sticking, this between 7-8 am. All fellow commuters going the other way seemed to be enjoying it too…

The slush started getting pretty thick up past the Burlingame Freddies on Barbur and just got thicker as I rode into Tigard on 99. Wasn’t really all that slick though. Looks like its stopped snowing now and is melting off quickly.

Pedaled in rain to Portland downtown. Bussed into snowy Multnomah Village… It stopped snowing just now.. 🙁

I’m glad I didn’t know it was snowing when I left the house at 5:30 because I magically didn’t see any snow. Now I’m going to worry about getting home this afternoon. 🙁

“Bike here! Snow must give 10 ft clearance!”

Paul Souders

As of about an hour ago it was definitely sticking above ~400ft.

It’s actually nicer/easier above the snow line, I could just brush the snow off my feet & gloves.

Not slick at all but the slush gummed up my gears and brakes.

Left Clackamas (205 bike path at Flavel) at 6:15 AM, there were just a few flakes in the rain. Crossed over the 205 bridge and made it up to McGillivray. Didn’t start showing serious flakes until around 7:25. Got to work at 7:45 and it was sticking pretty good. It’s stopped now with about 1/8 inch on the bushes and whatnot, slush on the road. Hopefully it warms up for the ride home at 4:30. =)

Left home at 5:45am this morning. 33 degrees and raining. No flakes noticed during my 50-minute ride, but rain/snow mix an hour later.

That’s my green bike. Because of built up slush, I had to ride in the car lane all the way down the Barnes Rd hill — super fun on a fixie! And the holeshots! — very difficult to start from a standing stop. Other than that, I couldn’t stop laughing all the way to work.

Left home in SE PDX around 8, right after a flurry. It was rainy and WET until I started to climb Terwilliger, and the rain turned completely to snow. Great ride!

Did anyone bike over the west hills? I was considering going home along Sunset and I’m wondering if i should just MAX it

Rode. Loved it. From NE on the other side of Alameda ridge where it was almost sticking to downtown.

At points I could brush the slush off of my jacket and gloves, but nowhere did I experience any slippery spots with my tires.

I opened my mouth wide to catch snowflakes numerous times with a big smile on my face.

It started snowing on the West side of Tigard around 7am. Started out big wet flakes but progressed to some serious ground-covering snowfall by about 7:30 or so. By the time I left the house at 8:15 we had a good covering and it was really coming down. I drove, because I have a bunch of errands to run during lunch today.

However, once I got on the East side of Hwy 99, closer to Hall, it was back to mostly rain with a few flakes and no accumulation, and now the sun is out.

Sounds like the weatherpeople are forecasting thunderstorms this afternoon, too. Crazy weather!

left Holgate a little after 6am and it seemed like mostly rain… by the time I hit Springwater I was seeing some snow mix… by the time I hit Milwaukie it was mostly snow… first time I’ve locked up the rear wheel trying to stop, that was around 6:30am at the edge of Milwaukie…

looking really nice out now… wtf?

for those of you who are familiar with sat-format questions:

portland : snowflakes :: chicken little : rain

there is never enough hyperbole to go around in this town once someone sees one of those white flakes. thus, i dub this latest storm the st. valentines blizz-massacre, and look forward to laughing at peoples over-reactions to it. from me, it gets a big MEH.

When I left the house, it looked like just another drizzly morning. Waiting for the bus at NE 7th & Multnomah, I noticed a few snowflakes among the raindrops. The C-TRAN bus drove me north into a full blizzard – big snowflakes the size of coasters. Not sticking to the ground as I got off the bus in Hazel Dell. Those huge flakes stung my face as I biked toward WSU. Snow on the ground when I reached the campus. My tires left tracks in the snow on the MUP up the hill to my office. An hour later, two inches has accumulated. Students were late, stuck on snowy roads. I’m glad I biked
early today.

I’m currently in Germany for a few months. We have had about 3 inches of snow on the ground for the past few days. Amazingly, the city even clears the snow from the bike lanes that are part of the side walk (sidewalks are divided into pedestrian and cycling lane)! They have these mini snowplows that can drive on the bike lanes. The pedestrian part is not cleared, because it’s the responsibility of the home owner. The bike paths, however, are city responsibility just like streets. Now, that would be a service in Portland!
