Mountain bike group signs historic agreement with Oregon State Parks
Portland-based mountain bike advocacy group Northwest Trail Alliance has signed what they are calling a “landmark agreement” with Oregon State Parks. The agreement — the first of its kind between the agency and a user group — gives the NWTA the authority to design, build and maintain a network of new mountain bike-specific trails in L.L. Stub Stewart State Park (in western Washington County about 30 miles west of Portland).
The agreement is welcome news for the NWTA, who just last month found themselves having to respond to an illegal mountain bike trail that was discovered in Forest Park.
Kids traffic safety curriculum goes open source
hazards from K-3 curriculum.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance, with a grant from the Oregon Safe Routes to School program, has developed a curriculum to teach traffic safety to young people. Called Neighborhood Navigators, the curriculum is available for kindergarten through eighth grade and is available free via download from the BTA’s website.
Here’s more about the curriculum from the BTA:
With Blumenauer’s support, Ride of Silence set for May 19th
Portland’s version of the Ride of Silence is set for May 19th. Ride organizer Brian Echerer has been working with other citizen activists and partners in hopes of re-invigorating the ride after a disappointing turnout last year and he got a boost in that regard yesterday when Congressman Earl Blumenauer endorsed the event.
The Ride of Silence started in 2003 in Dallas Texas and has since spread to hundreds of cities throughout the world. It’s a somber and silent affair meant to draw attention to road safety issues and remember people who have lost their lives while biking in traffic.

Listen up! BikePortland partners with 94.7 FM
page of 94.7fm website.
Last Fall, the folks at Entercom Radio in Portland called me up and said they wanted to do a promotional campaign that focused on bicycling. I like radio — and I especially like spreading the good word about bikes to new audiences — so I said I’d be happy to be a part of it. The result is the “Spring Cycle” — a partnership between 94.7 FM and BikePortland.org.
