Weekend Event Guide

A new film from Brian Vernor.

Despite the soggy forecast, we’ve got another great weekend guide with plenty to do and see around town, so bundle up, ride safely, and enjoy yourself!

Thursday, December 9th

7:00pm and 8:30pm: The Cyclocross Meeting, a film by Brian Vernor
A documentary on cyclocross and the personal experiences and connections it has inspired around the world, Brian Vernor’s new film screens this Thursday at the Clinton Street Theater. Treat yourself to free beer and door prizes at one of the two showings, and a Q&A with the filmmaker and a few cyclocross professionals. $10, tickets available at 21st Avenue Bicycles or online here.

Friday, December 10th

7:00pm-10:00pm: Crank Bicycles Grand Opening
Yet another addition to the already long list of new bicycle businesses in Portland, Crank Bicycles will be opening their shop this weekend in the bike-centric SE Buckman neighborhood. Stop by 2725 SE Ash Street and enjoy beer, door prizes, and more!

Saturday, December 11th

12:00pm: Hot Sock III–Over-the-Knee
A cold-weather edition of the popular Pedalpalooza ride, Hot Sock III pays tribute to our favorite tall-and-fuzzies on a group ride to some favorite hosiery businesses around town. Bring your favorite stockings and a bit of cash for snacks and socks and meet at New Cascadia Bakery.

12:00pm: Impromptu Railroad History Ride
Did you catch the photo on the front page of Cycle Wild’s encounter with the great Holiday Express steam locomotive? The experience was so fun for organizer and train enthusiast Matt Picio that he’s leading a group ride just to witness the ol’ SP4449 make it’s holiday trek down the Springwater Corridor. Meet Matt and the gang at Union Station then ride to see the train and other rail sites of interest along the way.

Sunday, December 12th

12:00pm: Mexi-Swedish Epic Bike Move of Love
Come help fellow bike community organizer and volunteer Esther Harlow move across town in true Portland style in this Santa Lucia holiday-themed bike move. Load up your trailer, pannier, or cargo bike at 9317 N Charleston Ave in St. Johns at noon and bring her belongings a short 10 miles to her new home at NE Fremont and 76th. New to bike moves? Find out all you need to know at the Shift website here.

6:00pm-9:00pm: Citybikes Drop-in Wrench Night
Take advantage of local bicycle co-op Citybikes‘ free drop-in night to use their tools, get advice, and get your bike ship-shape for the winter. This event takes place at the Citybikes Annex (734 SE Ankeny), come and go as you please.

Don’t for the CCC’s Holiday Bike Drive giveaway day is THIS Sunday at Legacy Emanuel. Contact the CCC if you are interested in helping out – it’s always a great time and you get to give bikes to kids! Yay bikes!

The Impromptu railroad ride is cancelled due to weather – the forecast has not improved, and rain is expected to be “heavy”. Go enjoy the Hot Sock III ride instead (rather than leaving early) and have a great weekend!

The Holiday Train is running all weekend. It’s a unique opportunity anywhere in the world to side side-by-side with a giant steam locomotive. The train runs from the Sellwood Bridge to the Ross Island Bridge at about 10 mph, just 10′ away from the Springwater Trail. I hope to brave the elements this year and pace the train. 2 years ago I paced it down and back in the snow, a magical experience.

Correction — “It’s a unique opportunity anywhere in the world to BICYCLE side-by-side…”
