We’ve launched our first ever reader survey and we’d really appreciate your participation. Take the survey here.
We’ve been publishing BikePortland for five wonderful years, but we’ve never asked about you, the people that make it what it is. Sure, I’ve gotten a pretty good sense of what type of folks read the site, but all the comments, emails, and face-to-face conversations over the years are just a tiny sampling of the audience and I’d like to find out more.
Why do a reader survey?
As our business matures, it’s important for us to be able to tell potential advertisers and other partners more about the people who read BikePortland. In addition, we also need to know who we’re writing for and most importantly, what you have to say about our work.
There are only a handful of questions and obviously it’s completely anonymous. Please take a few minutes to fill it out. We’d really appreciate it. Thank you.

Veloshop, River City, BikeTiresDirect, Epic Wheel Works, CitiBikes and CleverCycles all got my $$ in the last year directly because of references, stories and ads here.
if you required forum registration for comments to stories then you’d already have a lot of that information…
although if that was the case we’d probably have fewer comments and far less interesting conversation…

Done, but there is one slight problem. For age, it lists “under 18” and “19–24.” As an 18-year-old, I feel a bit left out.
That’s gonna continue to be the case untill you’re 21, John.

I’d like to see more Oregon options besides “Greater Portland” and “elsewhere in Oregon.” Wouldn’t a breakdown of region or city in Oregon be interesting?
Seager, yes a detailed breakdown of visitor location is useful. We get a fairly detailed (still anonymous) look at that from web site log data and decided to include the more general survey question to confirm that log info. For anyone interested, state traffic breaks down like this: (see graphic)

Done! Although I’m in Shanghai for a couple of years and my data may not matter, I hit up your advertisers for any needs I may have during my quarterly visit to PDX. I’m amazed at what you can get through security when you forget it’s in your backpack.
Just curious why sex or gender is not being asked?
Me too. It seems like an obvious question and I wonder if it was just overlooked – or was it not considered important?

The gender question was considered. It was more interesting to us to know your general likes/dislikes and suggestions than to know your gender ID. We are confident that we’d like greater female participation in content and readership so it wasn’t as interesting a question to us as Age or Visit Frequency.
That makes sense.
Though (after giving it some thought) it would also make sense to do a pre/post comparison of any changes that you made to attract more female readers. See what’s working and what’s not, you know?
Same question for race/ethnicity. Not sure how you’ll know if you’re getting increased readership/participation by non-male-identified or non-white folks if you don’t measure it. Seems like it’d be pretty interesting to see who bp appeals to in terms beyond income, family status, “bikieness” status, etc.
