The Portland Police Bureau is handling the November fatality of 32-year old Kipp Crawford as a homicide and they have just announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

At a news conference today (watch video below), PPB Detective Bryan Steed said he believes Crawford was the victim of an assault and robbery just prior to being hit being struck by two separate motor vehicles. Crawford, a popular local musician who used a bicycle as his primary means of transportation, was riding on North Willamette Boulevard near Hodge Street in the early morning hours of November 4th just prior to the incident.

Here’s more from a statement released by the PPB:

“Witnesses at the scene both saw and heard an angry altercation between Crawford and the unknown suspect in which the suspect was standing over Crawford as he lay in the middle of the street… Based on witness descriptions the suspect is described as a white male in his 20’s.”

The two people that struck Crawford were cited for drunk and reckless driving.

Crime Stoppers of Oregon is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in this case. If you can help, call them at 503-823-HELP (4357), leave a tip online, or text 823HELP plus your tip and send it to CRIMES (274697).

Below is a video by the PPB of today’s press conference that features Det. Steed and Kipp’s parents Vern and Jean Crawford:

A similar motive, different M.O. in San Francisco the other day:

Devastating. I hope someone’s conscience gets too heavy to bear and makes them speak.

I’m glad they’re pursuing this, but why did it take 4 months? Surely, the trail and likelihood someone’s going to know or remember something is less every day.

Just caught the KGW News segment. Kipp’s father totally broke me up.

I cried watching the news just now. I can’t imagine what kind of person would take another person’s life…and a big piece of his family and loved one’s hearts. I feel so sad and I absolutely ached watching Kipp’s parents. Please catch these guys!

That it took four months to declare this a homicide is outrageous.

I would like to know why it took four months for a homicide investigation to start. Was there a complicating factor? Did the motor vehicles hitting him destroy evidence of the assault?

Was the crime an unique event or was there a chance that the crime could happen again to someone else?

Even in a bad economy, is $1,000 really much of a reward?

Tony, If someone witnessed that I sincerely doubt they’d ever forget it. I hope someone comes forward.

@ Hart # 7 and Marcus Griffith # 8 –

My assumption is that the detectives took a good, hard look at the motor vehicle operators to insure they weren’t behind the robbery-homicide.

So are the drunk drivers off the hook now?

The drunk drivers were still drunk, so their still on the hook for DUI and hitting the guy in the street. That bit hasn’t changed.

If you think 4 months for police action is outrageous – you certainly haven’t deal with government services much before have you? Sad – yes, but this is the way most police matters go in my experience…

I find this REALLY interesting:
“Detective Bryan Steed said he believes Crawford was the victim of an assault and robbery just prior to being hit being struck by two separate motor vehicles”

So, did these guy throw him to the curb?

I remember the outrage my fellow bike community had when this case first broke – it had already tried and convicted the car drivers as guilty. I called for cooler heads until the truth came out; but was drowned out by cries for their heads and that this was ‘just another example why cars should be banned’.

Yet I don’t see one letter apologizing to the drivers (who also suffered unjustly SINCE then) or even the smallest admission that far too many of my fellow cyclists went overboard.

So to that end – let’s catch the REAL culprits and I’ll be the first to apologize to those I share the street with that some members of my community were wrong to spew so much vitriol, hatred, and for trying and convicting these motorists without the whole story.

Please folks – if we don’t want to polarize – DON’T make blanket accusations and spew so much hatred without the facts.

Wow – sounds like these guys

Kipp was one of my best friends and I have often thought I should go to the closest bar near where he was murdered and just wait for the casual brag, or off color comment and find this/ these sobs. He was very loved and this world was a better place with him in it.
