The River City Bicycles Cross Crusade’s sixth race of the season brought the show to Barton Park over the weekend.
Judging from photos, reports, and my memory from last year, the race site was a muddy, gravel pit full of tricky descents, big puddles, and slippery run-ups that provided more than than share of thrills and spills.
One of the many casualties I heard about was the director of the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association, Kenji Sugahara. Kenji broke his collarbone and got some nasty gravel-rash. He posted about the accident on his blog. Ever the evangelist, he wrote, “I have to say I think I convinced two folks in the ER to race bikes.”

This weekend, the Crusade continues close to home at Portland International Raceway. Also this weekend is the much-anticipated SSCXWC, the unofficial “World Championships” of single speed ‘cross racing.

Barton Park was a blast to watch. Only in cyclocross are you gonna see so many grins on the faces of riders who’ve just wiped out. I hope all the wounded warriors heal soon!
