New Belgium Urban Assault Ride. Beer and Bikes. Thats right! Team Beer WILL be representing. The competition will be between Team Beer One (John Howe and Jeff TB) and Team Beer Two (Cory and Rick). I\’m predicting an easy victory for Team One. Easy.

Heading out right now for a training ride with Ben D. Ride support will be provided by Lucius and Cleo.

BEEER!

Man, my bike fun this weekend is going to have to be one of your previous posts J. The Oregonian-staffer piece started a discussion that I thought was fascinating. That is just about the longest string of comments, without descending into a mess… Thanks again for that post. I hope everybody gets where they\’re going by bike this weekend, safe and without incident!

After doing a strenuous climb up mt. scott in se (about 1000 ft), I decided the rain was a bit much and sat indoors in made some accessories. I made a decorative S hook that I can use for hanging the bike in the MAX when the books are full and then made a water bottle holder . . .

My husband and I biked 28 miles roundtrip from our house in North Portland to a friend\’s house in SW for a game night. Turns out Barber Blvd is almost entirely uphill going away from downtown, which made the commute back into downtown super fast!! It probably helped that it was 1am and there were no cars around.

The Urban Assault Ride totally rocked today, in spite of less than ideal conditions. Felt more like \’cross. The challenges were awesome. Hard not to smile while sliding out in Pioneer Square on a kid\’s big-wheel. Team Sorellas grabbed 2nd place in the women\’s division and I got third in the mini-bike limbo contest afterwards. So. Much. Fun. Pics and video later.

Happy long weekend PDXers!

We\’re biking around Manhattan, visiting the waterfront park in Williamsburg and catching a glance of the Tour de Brooklyn. Discovered all the great improvements NYC is making to the bike infrastructure.

For those interested, photos in my flickr stream and on the blog.

just gotta say i love the current \’summer of bike love\’ header image jonathan. I\’m far away from my bike up here in seattle, but having a blast at folk life festival. Every visit here makes me thankful for the comparative bike bliss we\’ve got in ptown.

Though they probably won\’t read this, BIG thanks to the touring couple from California!!! They flew up for the long weekend with their Comotion tandem (disassembled in two suitcases) to ride out through the Gorge. My girlfriend and I had ridden to Roweena through the Twin Tunnels trail and were making the climb back from Mosier when my chain broke. They stopped and took out a chain tool and installed a Missing Link.

Today it\’s wet but starting to clear out here in Hood River. I\’ll ride my mountain bike over to remember our fallen heroes this morning, then go find a logging road to climb (until the wind picks up :).

Enjoy your Memorial Day everyone!

This weekend I completed my first 600 kilometer brevet (for the non-metric crowd, that\’s 375 miles, give or take). I had 40 hours in which to complete it, and I finished in 38 hours, 25 minutes – sprinting the last 8 miles to ensure that time (of course, by that point my \”sprint\” was 16 mph on the flat). In that time I even got 2 hours of sleep!

The first part of the course took me on some amazing roads in the Coast Range that I had never ridden (the stretch from Blodgett to Logsden via the Summit Hwy and Logsden Road was outstanding – even the 2 miles of gravel at the summit on Logsden was just fine). I was lucky and missed all the heavy weather – I understand the faster riders got walloped by the rain. Sometimes it pays to be slow.

No riding today. 🙂

Last week I got a bike – I haven\’t ridden since I was a kid. My 9 and 11 year-old kids ride around the neighborhood and I wanted to start riding with them to get a feel for their safety practices and help them become more street-wise before they venture further out.

I bought a cruiser, which felt MUCH more like what I was used to as a kid – I can put my feet down, etc. I rode around the neighborhood a little bit (hilly! quad burn!), and loved the exercise and the feeling of the wind whooshing past me.

Saturday I took the kids and the three bikes (on my new bike rack) to the Springwater corridor, where we did about 6 miles, mostly flat. It was big fun, and we unexpectedly had a bit of neighborhood to go through, so I got to talk them through some things.

I\’m so happy that the cycling community is thriving here… it\’s a wonderful new activity for us!

There will never be a safe bike ride with automobiles until it\’s safe for automobiles to share the road with other automobiles.

Since our nation\’s founding we have lost almost 500 times as many people on our roads than on the battlefields of all American wars fought.

Yes, there is a solution.

My boyfriend competed at PIR this weekend and we got a chance to try all the random crazy fun human powered vehicles – I even beat him drag racing tadpole trikes.

New shopping list:
a trike for me
rans screamer for touring.

Care to share the sources and calculations for this claim?

Rode up the Old Columbia River Gorge Highway to Vista Point on Monday morning in the _pouring_ _rain_. Coming down the hill through Corbett and some of the raindrops were so big the snapped your head back when they hit you in the face (at 30-40+ mph). Not sure if I\’ve ever been that wet before – but the ride was perfect. I really do love riding in a downpour if it\’s warm enough outside.

My bike might disagree.

Not a lot of riding over the weekend, but we did catch some human powered vehicles at PIR this weekend.

All I want for a Christmas is a 75-tooth chainring…
