Pedalpalooza update: Poster unveiled; more events than ever

With over 170 events planned (so far), the Pedalpalooza 2008 is poised to be the biggest ever. The seventh annual event (June 12-28) is facilitated by Shift but fueled by the community.

Also, the traditional unveiling of the Pedalpalooza poster happened over the weekend. This year’s poster was created by none other than local stencil artist Tiago DeJerk.

The craziness begins with the traditional Kickoff Parade through downtown Portland on June 12 and culminates with the Multnomah County Bike Fair on June 28. In between are scores of rides and events created by everyday Portlanders that exemplify the term “bike fun”.

This year’s schedule truly has something for everyone — unicycle polo, police on bikes, nakedness, togas, bike porn, bike-in movies, donuts, tacos, mini-bikes, tall-bikes, Sprockettes!, knitting, labor history, rubenesque women, zombies, fountains, David Bowie vs. Prince, and oh, so much more!

If you have a ride idea, add it (read this first)! The official calendar will be distributed in the Portland Mercury in early June and all events listed by today at 5:00 Monday, May 12th will be included (you can add events after that, they just won’t be on the printed calendar).

For more on Pedalpalooza, see the official website, or browse my extensive ride reports and photos from 2005, 2006 and 2007.

I\’m really excited to be hosting the world\’s largest bike parade during Pedalpalooza as part of Cirque du Cycling, a benefit for Self Enhancement, Inc.

If you\’re in a club or other riding posse, check out the parade info on our site, get your crew together and sign up to be in the parade! Everyone else, come out and WATCH. There will also be a criterium street race at night and an afternoon (free) family ride to Peninsula Park.

XB and Mizake: Come to the Bowie Vs. Prince ride and face off against each other! Y\’all can battle it out with the dozens of other bowies and princes.

Let the dancing, karaoke, and bike riding determine the winner!

Sweet poster, Tiago.

What brilliant and beautiful art on the poster (font inhales deeply, tho). Superb doesn\’t begin to describe it! Makes me want to ride by the building downtown and see where she climbed off or try to catch a glimpse as Portlandia races down on a ZooBomb…

I hope there is more than one poster?

If the shift \”community\” wants more young hipsters bike jousting then this is great artwork! The poster is a poor choice to bring in new people to the cycling community.

Is this poster a minor error? I feel shift is shifting too much towards the hipster and away from the population that must be drawn into cycling.
BIke jousters don\’t need to be on the cover to be attracted to Pedalpalooza. Kids, moms and other outsiders need to be on the cover to feel like they belong on the inside.

There are many other examples of how non hipsters are pushed away by shift. Here is just one of many: I went to the film fest called film by bike. On Sunday the sound system was turned up so loud I needed earplugs. I went back to the people in charge and made a polite request and was told no in a rude way. When I mentioned again politely that it was a family friendly Sunday event the boss said no it was not.

Last year there were many reminders to invite new people to create new rides for pedalpalooza. It seems there was a lot less work done this year to invite outsiders to plan rides for the calendar.

first mention: Feb 18th via email to the shift list.

Second mention ..April 12 the first public notice that a deadline exists of May 1st.

I missed the two emails above. My bad. And I\’m not going to waste my time adding an event that will not make it to print.

Clearly shift did a worse job of outreach. They could have done a much better job of posting calendar deadlines. They could have emailed all people who managed a ride last year ( aka myself ).

I could have been more active in Shift leadership but why would I waste my time trying to give input to deaf ears.

Oh those Shift hipsters! Always serving us coffee and donuts on the bridges with their tight pants and their fixed gear jousting bikes! Always debating legal issues and wonking out over bike infrastructure on their exclusive hipster list-serve!

It\’s true that the nagging about posting events has been fairly scarce (we miss you Organic Brian!). The reality, though, is that Pedalpalooza already has far more events on the calendar than it ever has…and the deadline is still a week away. 3 of the 178 events involve jousting but 23 are specifically marked as family friendly / for kids. If there\’s something you feel is missing, feel free to add it.

If you\’re intimidated by Portlandia holding a lance, you\’re probably not an outsider as outsiders are unlikely to recognize a lance or know about bike jousting. Portlandia on a little-bike is a fun and welcoming image, as far as I\’m concerned. I\’ll be thrilled to see Tiago\’s work on posters and calendars this year.

And although Filmed by Bike is NOT a Shift event…it does benefit an event organized by Shift called the Multnomah County Bike Fair. It\’s June 28th at Col. Summers Park. It\’s not expressly family-friendly. There will be jousting and some hipsters may be present.

Oh, and any hipster knows that, thanks to The Life Aquatic Soundtrack, Bowie is so 2004. Prince is the clear winner.

The non-hipster loves the poster (I live in Washington County!). It\’s very Portlandly … Portlandish … imbues the spirit that is Portland.

And, on my defense, I\’m more of a punk than a hipster…

As an event organizer of past PP events, I did receive an e-mail.

I\’ve also organized PP events that didn\’t make it on the printed calendar and the attendance was great. There are always plenty of changes to the calendar and attendees seem to be pretty tapped into checking the online calendar, which is great for those of us who can\’t get our act together in time for such an (understandably) early deadline.

Yes, bikers, get your sleep while you can!

Joe Rowe and others! Shift meets the first wednesday of every month at 6:30pm at the Belmont Library branch at SE 39th and Taylor. Everyone\’s welcome who wants to come get involved. The only kind of unwelcome involvement, or ideas that \”fall on deaf ears\” are those not backed up by a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get involved.

Shift \”leadership\” consists of whoever happens to show up and wants to work. Shift is all-volunteer, no officers, no formality, no bureaucracy. Our so-called membership is always in flux. That\’s why sometimes our events are a bit haphazard — but that\’s also why they\’re almost always enthusiastic, crazy, creative and awesome.

Yup, every year we need new blood, especially for big draining projecs like Pedalpalooza and MCBF. I\’m excited that you\’re interested in working on branding and outreach for Pedalpalooza \’09, Joe. If you come to the Shift meeting tomorrow night we can get a headstart on that. Anyone else is welcome too. Bring your ideas and energy and calendars.

But the question of the week for the printed calendar … where is TIMO and his events?

Will this be a sans TIMO year…will he take the month off to be a Pedal Palooza tourist? Will a new TIMO arise to to fill his cruller?

(TIMOesque Ride: Anyone for a 24 hour Oregon Burrito Ride – a bike tour of all Muchas Gracias – all 11 while ordering an Oregon Burrito at each? Organize away and put it on the calendar.)

Tune in in June…at least we can bask in the slipstream of the TIMO ladies.
