In the last few days, I’ve noticed two important positions come up that present great opportunities for bicycle-conscious leaders to play a larger role in the future of Portland.
Given the recently renewed conversations about the potential of increased bicycle access in Forest Park, this first one comes at an interesting time.
Friends of Forest Park is looking for a new Executive Director. I hope whoever they choose understands and appreciates the role that bicycles can play in the health and future of that park.
I’m not an expert in these things, but it’s interesting to note that in the job description, the Friends mention they are, “undergoing a major transition from a supportive “Friends” group to a leadership “Conservancy.””
I don’t know if that means they’ll be taking a harder line against increased bicycle access or if that change is just organizational housekeeping (perhaps someone can enlighten us).
The other place I hope a rational, bicycle-aware person ends up is on the Portland Planning Commission. The Mayor announced yesterday that he needs to fill several vacancies in this group.
The Planning Commission advises City Council on any proposal “that directly affects any goal or policy related to any element of the City’s Comprehensive Plan.” Included among these is an opportunity to review and comment on transportation plans.
It’s absolutely crucial that people in positions like these understand and appreciate the positive roles bicycles can play in the future of our city.

yes, planning commission would benefit from another bicycle-freindly commissioner. I know at least one planning commission positions is held by a very bicylce and ped freindly person -Amy Cortese. Amy has been a bike commuter and recreational cyclist for some time and does a great job representing the bike/ped perspective. Keep up the good work Amy!
