Portland just scored another bike industry coup.
Kirk Pacenti of Pacenti Cycle Design — a well-known designer and supplier of bicycle lugs and frame tubing — has announced that he will move his business to Portland by the end of next year.
Pacenti supplies artisan bicycle builders with everything needed to build a frame and provides expertise in designing, engineering and sourcing lugs, dropouts and other frame components.
Pacenti is also a frame tubing broker and distributor and represents Columbus in addition to other manufacturers and can supply tubes in titanium, aluminum, carbon fiber, and steel.

Pacenti has worked with many of top frame builders in the country including locals like Joseph Ahearne, Sacha White, and Andy Newlands.
Six years ago, Pacenti moved to Chattanooga Tennessee to work at Litespeed Bicycles, but from a conversation I had with him this morning, he said he never intended to stay in Tennessee for the long haul:
“I was on a five-year plan when I moved here. I used to live in Seattle and I’ve I always liked Portland better. The fact that I’ve already got a lot of customers in Portland will certainly be a benefit to my business.”
In a story reported today at BicycleRetailer.com, Pacenti recently left his day job after his bike business jumped 50% last year.
Pacenti Cycle Design will be a nice complement to Portland’s talented crop of bike builders and Pacenti says he looks forward to plugging into the ongoing efforts to promote and develop the local bike industry.

I, too, need to take the UBI class. It would be great if they opened a satellite campus here in Portland. Or if one of the many builders in town decided to start offering a class of their own. You know, for something to do with all of their free time…
