Pedalpalooza Daily – 6/19

[Pedalpalooza runs from 6/8 – 6/24 and is organized by Shift to Bikes. View the full schedule here and get the latest ride reports here.]

Happy Monday everyone.

The Pedalpalooza beat goes on today with a ride I’m really looking forward to; Bike Safety for Grown Ups. It’s being led by the spirited Elicia Cardenas (you might remember her from the Bike Wedding).

I’ve seen her in action teaching bike safety to kids and trust me, be prepared to laugh and learn tonight at 6:00 at Abernethy School!

Here’s the full list of today’s rides:

RIDE WITH GEE DUBYA “PRATFALL” BOOSH
9th & SE Hawthorne Blvd (near the Lucky Lab)
11:30am
Mr. Boosh is coming to Little Beirut! And he’s gonna ride in the hootenanny too. Here’s your chance to ride with the 2term-minator, himself. But take care, his riding is prone to spills and falls. Never fear, though, he won’t… fall into office… a third time. Celebrate then the Falls & Follies of Boosh on this ride. Note, protestors will “not” be allowed to express themselves at this event.

Ummmmm, Vancouver is getting recognition as “bike friendly”? Is this our neighbor to the north where motorists routinely swear at bicyclists (happened to me twice in one ride) and throw Big Gulps out their car windows? Are they getting gold, or platinum?

Oh no! What happened to the Woodlawn Booze Cruise? I’ll have to find somewhere else to bring all these cookies and beer… doh.

Ethan,

Vancouver was actually given the “Bronze” award several months ago. Tonight’s ceremony is more of a media event than anything else.

I agree with your tone that the LAB’s Bike Friendly Community program loses integrity by awarding communities like Beaverton (and to a lesser extent Vancouver)…but the truth is that this program is as much a PR tool for the League as anything else.

But all cynicism aside, the program actually works. Cities all over the country are competing for these awards (including Portland) and the result is more livable and bike-friendly communities.

It’s easy to lose perspective when you bike in a place like Portland. Vancouver, for all its faults, is still an absolutely wonderful place to bike compared to Detroit and the other SE Michigan communities I grew up in. I suspect cyclists in places like Houston or Atlanta would say the same.
