Help name my new column in The Bicycle Paper

Big_logo

The Bicycle Paper has been covering the Pacific Northwest bike scene since 1972. It’s distributed free on over 500 newsstands throughout British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Oregon (70 of those are in Portland).

They’re looking to expand their coverage of Portland and Oregon, so starting with the March issue, I’ll be writing a news column for them on a regular basis. The only problem is, we can’t think of a good name.

Got any ideas?

Can’t wait to read your column…why not “The Bike Chain” as a symbol of a love for the sport–and its equipment– and to symbolize the column as Portland’s “link” to the rest of the NW.

The Spokesman.

How about a play off of one of your own stickers: Random Acts of Bike Fun.

Or, if the column is specifically addressing the Portland scene…keep it simple…”Bike Portland.”

I like ‘The Spokesman’!

Funny thing is that my mom suggested “Spokesman” too. Thanks for all your ideas. I know they want the column to be more news oriented – as opposed to commentary/humor – so I’m not sure how cute they’ll want it to be. I’ll keep you posted and keep the ideas coming if you’ve got them…

“The Missing Link”
(bike shop in Berkekely, CA – but cool name)

(Spokesman is a shop in Santa Cruz, CA – if it matters)

How about the name of a old bike shop I worked at, Dr. Spokes?

Or, realistically, “The Paper Boy”..
I mean , Right, I am a messenger. But my first job, was as a paper boy in the hills of Palos Verdes. That job changed my whole life..
The paper boy is the epidemy of the bicycle as a tool. Even a ten year old boy can make money with his bike and some gumption.

How about “News on a Roll”? Congrats on this, it sounds like lots of fun. They sure picked a good person to do it!

Jonathan, I think Jessica and your mom hit it w/ The Spokesman. It has a a fun braggadocio and hip hop flavor about it that is quite appealing.

I agree, “The Spokesman” is cool, but it’s just used too much already. The editor isn’t keen on it either and she writes the checks so that’s that.

And the column will cover all of Oregon (not just Portland), sorry if I didn’t make that clear.

The Bicycle Paper staff suggested “Oregon Trails” but they’re not super thrilled with that.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far…I’ll keep reading them over and I’m sure something perfect will spring forth eventually…

I’ve got to decide on a name because the first column is due in a few weeks! I really appreciate all your submissions. Here’s what I like:

Oregon Trails – boring, basic, but it works.
The News Cycle – just not sure everyone will “get it”

I’m going to give myself until Friday to decide…the paper has to work up a graphic to got with it and I’ll post it when it’s ready. Thanks again!
