Welcome to the weekend (well, not yet, I've still got some new stories to share)!

I've put together another scintillating selection of cycling events for your perusal and planning purposes. Check them out below and let me know if I've overlooked anything.

All Weekend

60th Annual Greek Festival
This is one of Portland's most beloved ethnic festivals. I wouldn't usually post something like this, but organizers contacted me to make sure folks knew that this year they'll have tons of bike parking set up just for the event (thanks to BikeRacker of course). Ventura Park Pump Track Meet-and-Greet
Get an early glimpse at Portland's very first pump track and meet the people who made it happen. This meet-n-greet event is hosted by the Northwest Trail Alliance. Bring a shovel and a smile and be ready to put in some sweat equity into this exciting new off-road facility. 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Ventura Park (SE Stark and 115th).

Friday night at 7:00 pm is your first chance to see the entries and meet the builders who are competing in the Constructor's Design Challenge to build the "Ultimate modern utility bike." OregonManifest.com. (more...)

Join Sugar Wheel Works and lots of other cool people and local bike companies for a benefit party to benefit the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and their Safe Routes to Schools program. The weekend is right around the corner. We're almost afraid to talk about the nice weather we've been having; but let's hope some of this sun sticks around for the great events below.

We're looking forward to a picnic and some great local bike racing at Mt. Tabor on Saturday, perhaps followed up by Sunday Parkways on Sunday. Yes, the summer cycling season is just getting warmed up. Check the events below and if we left anything out, feel free to shout it out in the comments.

    7:00 am - 10:00 pm:
    5% Day for B-shares at Whole Foods Market in the Pearl
    -B-Line leverages the sunken costs of their existing delivery routes to pick up and deliver surplus food to agencies providing food assistance. Whole Foods (Pearl) will donate 5% of the day's sales to local bike delivery B-Line's B-shares program.

    9:00am - 1:00pm: Stub Stewart Trail Fest work party
    Join the Northwest Trail Alliance to maintain and develop the trail system at Stub Stewart State Park. Bring your bike! No experience necessary. Some food provided so sign up in advance over at NWTA. This is one of the most important things you can do to improve mountain biking in the region! (more...)

After a several weeks of what seemed like non-stop bike events, this weekend's guide is comparatively light, accompanied by a damp forecast.  Is it the calm before the storm?  Probably yes, in more ways than one.

Friday, October 22nd

10:00am-4:00pm: Walls of Pride
Join the Dill Pickle Club, the Walls of Heritage Committee, and the Mallory Avenue Community Enrichment on this guided tour of Portland's African American public art.  The event will feature presentations from some of the artists and local curators, on an easy-paced 10 mile loop around town.  Ride meets at the Mallory Ave Community Enrichment Center at 126 NE Alberta, tickets ($10) and are available through the event website here.

The main event of Freak Bike Fall, come join what promises to be a crazy good race. Freak bikes of all shapes and sizes will compete in a race around town, stopping at some truly unique and interesting checkpoints along the way. Race begins at Irving Park, NE 7th and Fargo.

This is Portland-based Chris King Precision Components' signature event. With McMinnville as a base, riders enjoy a metric century and and an absolutely excellent feast all along the way. Tour de Tillamook (All weekend)
Two days of mountain biking and camping in the Tillamook State Forest. What's not to love? Hosted by the Northwest Trail Alliance, this family-oriented weekend event features guided mountain bike rides, kids skills clinics, food, trail rides, demo bikes, and more. 8:30 pm: Cycle Shrine Art Installation Ride
Portlander Becky Morton is opening up a new store called BIKEASAURUS (1337 SE MLK) next month. This ride is a "christening of the space to make it bike friendly." Becky's shop will sell bike accessories and locally-made crafts and she plans to put the Cycle Shrine in the window so folks can see it from the street. Meet at Naito Fountain under the Burnside Bridge and come wearing a dinosaur costume or the color green. Free spoke cards, cookies and punch, vegan dinosaur eggs, and more!

The forecast calls for a chance of snow and freezing rain on Saturday morning, and better chance of less-freezing rain for the rest of the weekend. Other than that it should be a great time to get out there for a ride (all night, at that). And this being Portland, there's no lack of opportunity.

There's also a sizeable Portland contingent down in Bend right now for the 2009 Cyclocross National Championships -- good luck to them! (more...)
