How can improving our transportation systems improve our communities, our health, and our lives -- that is, for all of us? Come learn about and discuss these issues at the PSU Native American Center.

7:00am - 9:00am: Breakfast on the Bridges
Leave a few minutes early for your downtown commute and take a break on the Hawthorne or Steel Bridges for a cup of coffee, a donut, and some good company. (more...)

The forecast calls for a chance of snow and freezing rain on Saturday morning, and better chance of less-freezing rain for the rest of the weekend. Other than that it should be a great time to get out there for a ride (all night, at that). And this being Portland, there's no lack of opportunity.

There's also a sizeable Portland contingent down in Bend right now for the 2009 Cyclocross National Championships -- good luck to them! (more...)

We've been wondering when the bike event season would start winding down, and with only three events popping out at us on the calendar this weekend, it looks like it might finally be happening. Not that you're off the hook -- there's still fun to be had, organized and otherwise. So bundle up and get out there!

This year, bike event season seems to only have sped up as the weather has gotten cooler. Tonight's grand opening of the Artcrank poster show marks the beginning of six weeks of Oregon Manifest. The Manifest's flagship events are also this weekend, in which 30 framebuilders are competing for judges' approval and in a 77 mile race. The infamous Cross Crusade series opens on Sunday. As if that isn't enough, there's also a full lineup including a bike move, social rides, a wonky talk, and a movie. (more...)

5:00pm – 7:00pm: Car-Free Happy Hour
Monthly social networking meetup for people who live carfree, do work that helps reduce car use, and/or the carfree-curious. On the second Thursday of each month. New location at Amnesia Brewing at 832 N Beech (at Mississippi).

5:30pm: Third Annual Woodlawn to Swifts Ride
Meet at Good Neighbor Pizza at NE 8th and Dekum; ride leaves at 5:45 for Northwest Portland to watch the swifts fly down the chimney just before sunset at Chapman Elementary. Bring a blanket and a picnic.

6:00pm - 8:00pm Bike Camping 102: Winter Camping
A free class covering the basics of off-season bike camping, including where to go, how to handle the weather, and why this might actually be a lot of fun. At theHawthorne Hostel, 3031 SE Hawthorne Blvd (Bike parking in back, enter through back door in yard). (more...)

Friday, September 4th

4:00pm: Carfree Couve Ride
Celebrate Carfree Day in Vancouver, Washington. Meet at the southeast corner of Farragut Park, 7700 N Vancouver Ave, Portland. Ride to the Couve leaves at 5:00pm.

5:30pm: Bike to the Birds: Vaux's Swift Picnic Ride
Bring a picnic blanket and meet at the west end of the Steel Bridge to ride to view the famous birds fly into the school chimney up in Northwest, with a stop on the way for groceries. Will reschedule for next Friday if it's wet.

6:30pm: Vegan Dinner Ride
The second installment of VDBR is Friday, Sept. 4. Meet at 6:30 at Colonel Summers Park (at the corner of SE Yamhill and SE 20th) for a fun, social ride to a $5 vegan-friendly dinner spot in town, followed by another stop for drinks and dessert. All eating persuasions welcome.

It's the weekend! And it's a big one. Bridge Pedal, Portland's iconic, 20,000 rider strong annual event is coming -- this year with an Expo the day before. The Twilight Criterium is also happening this weekend, as are several rides inspired by successful Pedalpalooza events...and two separate events that celebrate Muppets. Read on for details. All Weekend Long

Mt. Hood Cycling Classic
This premier racing event started earlier in the week and it runs through Sunday. The action happens out near Hood River and the Dalles, so if you're headed out that way, add this to your plans. There's a time trial in the Gorge tomorrow (6/5) and then two tough road stages over the weekend. (more...)

Pedalpalooza Kickoff Dance Party Construction and Clean Up Day
What more glorious way to spend a weekend than volunteering for a good cause?

The Pedalpalooza kickoff dance party (followed, per Portland tradition, by the world's largest World Naked Bike Ride) is on June 13th this year. If you're free this afternoon, drop in to help make the space magical! Ability to hold a hammer or broom the only requirement.

Many more volunteers are needed for the event itself. Shifts and signup info here.

Zoobomb Public Art Unveiling

It's the long weekend, it's going to be beautiful, and as always there is a lot going on in the wide world of bikes.

Human Power Challenge
Join Oregon Human Powered Vehicles at PIR for a weekend-long series of drag races, time trials, and displays of skill, agility, and speed -- all powered by people, though this year features the first race with an electric assist category. It's free to come watch the spectacle.

It's the weekend! The main event is blue skies and temperatures in the 80s.

It looks like there are also a few organized bicycle rides and events happening.

Ride to the Farmer's Market from Ladd's Circle on Saturday with bike2market -- and while you're there, take advantage of a workshop on biking with cargo, presented by Joe Bike, where you can "learn how to haul kids, concrete, kayaks, or a week's worth of groceries by bike." (more...)

- Or if you've been thinking about joining us at the Opera, it's not too late to get tickets. Or if you're a student, a senior, or in the military, show up at 6:30 to see if you can snag a $10 ticket.
