I think this "Get Together" idea just might have some legs. I honestly did not expect many people to show up, but I was very pleasantly surprised when about 50 people came out to the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village last night just to talk bikes.

You don't hear about it as much as inner southeast and other neighborhoods closer to the city, but there is clearly a big, pent-up demand and lots of energy for biking in outer southwest. The turnout last night -- both in quantity of people and the quality of the conversations -- was a testament to that. (more...)

Tonight, I'm headed to Southwest Portland for the second in our ongoing series of Get Together events. We'll be at the Lucky Labrador Brewpub in Multnomah Village (7675 SW Capitol Hwy.) from 5-7:00pm.

If you live, work, or ride in and around the circuitous, hilly roads of Southwest Portland we'd love to meet you and we hope you'll consider joining us. The point of these events is simply to learn and connect. They're a great way to learn about hot bike issues and meet other bikers in your neighborhood (I hope eventually they grow to include even people that don't ride, but are curious for whatever reason). Our first Neighborhood Get Together, in St Johns last month, was a lot of fun and a definite success.

To keep the wheels turning, this month we're headed to Southwest Portland. Come join us on Tuesday, March 3rd from 5 to 7pm at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village, at 7675 SW Capitol Hwy.

We had our first ever Get Together event in St. Johns tonight and I have to say -- mission accomplished!

We had a nice turnout. Knowledge was shared. New connections were made. Beer, fries, tots, and burgers were consumed. All in all, a great way to kickoff this new series of events.

One thing I'm looking forward to with these events is riding in different neighborhoods. I haven't ridden on N. Willamette Blvd. for a long time and, with a clear view of Mt. Hood, I picked a great night to head up there. (Unfortunately, my ride ended on a bad note when I encountered a major repaving project toward the northern end of the street. The city has torn up the middle of the roadway, leaving a very sharp curb to mount in order to stay in the shoulder/bike lane. Add the high speed of cars, buses, and lots of dust, and the idyllic N. Willamette experience on the bluff turns quickly unpleasant.) (more...)

Just a reminder that tonight is our Get Together event up in St. Johns.

If you live, work, or ride in the St. Johns area, we'd love to meet you and hear about what's on your mind in terms of the local bike scene. General advocacy, bike fun, PBOT plans -- bring your insights and questions to share with others in the community.

I'm happy to announce that several folks actively involved with neighborhood transportation issues and two experts from the Bureau of Transportation will be on hand to answer your questions. (more...)
