@offhegoes: I think that motorists with bike racks on their cars spend more time driving around with the bike ON the car than they do riding their bikes. And they're not the people you'll see riding on city streets.

@Steve: I mostly agree with you, although I do have a bike rack on my car for mountain biking and I ride around town a lot too. I just try to give people with bike racks the benefit of the doubt that they actually use their bikes and don't just drive around with it on top (or behind) their car.

This is an interesting situation Portland has going on. I like being able to follow the changes as you blog them.
