Default Out of Towner in Downtown

Once a month I take the Amtrak from Eugene to Portland for a meeting. I would like to take advantage of the bike facilities Amtrak is offering, and I am looking for the best bicycle route to and from Union Station to SW Corbett & SW Bancroft. The train schedule makes me travel during the cut & thrust of the rush hour (arrive 8:30 am, depart 6:00 pm).

Obviously, an out of towner, downtown at rush hour could be a little dicey. Any help you can provide would be a appreciated.

The most direct and mildly bike friendly route is to go up to 11th, cut through psu to broadway, take broadway across to get on barbur then brave the left turn off of barbur at bancroft. Barbur has a bike lane, but it's a big road. I would not recommend taking Broadway through downtown even though it has a bike lane (in the words of one famous Admiral Akbar "It's a trap!").

Coyote, here's a route that's fairly direct & avoids most of the heavy traffic in downtown, using Waterfront Park path - a little over 3 miles:

If you want to determine your own route, here's some good bike maps:

Thanks for the responses Bikieboy and Endform. I will likely try the waterfront bike path and 1st on this first trip.
