keith - you'll want to consult the city's Southwest Neighborhood bike map for possibilities:
http://www.sustainableportland.org/T...221#nhood.maps the ride up (or more so, down) thru the cemetery is a pleasure -

Thanks Bikieboy. Was wondering though, is it better to take Terwilliger up to Barbur on up or to take a more direct route through the burbs?

Once you get up through the cemetery, Terwilliger-Barbur-Capital Hwy will be your 'flattest' route. Unless you are a glutton for punishment, don't be tempted by the Terwilliger-Boones Ferry-Stephenson-Walking Woods Drive route. The SW bike map is missing hill arrows on Stephenson, and Walking Woods will literally have you walking by the top.
I have not ridden it personally, but I think turning on Arnold off of Boones Ferry and jogging over to Pomona on SW 35th would be worth investigating. (Or maybe the Coronado-Vacuna-Vesta route in lieu of Pomona.) |

While not flat, this route is probably the most direct:
N on Macadam from Sellwood Bridge L at light on SW Taylors Ferry R on SW Fulton Park Blvd L on SW Corbett Ave R on SW Custer R on SW Briar Pl (cross I-5) L on SW Miles L on Barbur Blvd Barbur to SW Capitol Hwy to SW 49th (PCC) The Taylors Ferry/Fulton Park/Briar Pl section is a good climb (not quite as bad as the Cemetery) - it's low traffic, short, and manageable. ________ vaporizer reviews Last edited by Axel; 01-19-2011 at 03:45 AM. |

That's an interesting option Axel. I've never ridden Fulton Park Blvd, and it looks appealing. Certainly will save you some elevation gain and loss that you would otherwise have to incorporate going through the cemetery. My perception is that if you make the proper turns the cemetery route is not particularly steep. But if you get off track, you can hit some pesky inclines that might leave you thinking about buying a plot rather than completing the ride.
FWIW, I checked out Pomona between SW35th and SW 49th (in a car) yesterday evening on my way home from the cement pond. It is fairly steep. Not for beginners, but probably OK if you're at least an average young whippersnapper with low gears. Best to leave the fixie recumbent at home. |

Even the best way through the cemetery (keep to the right after the parking lot) is hard.....right? Don't make me feel weak! It's hard!!!!

I AM in my granny gear.......oh well. I've been doing Germantown road...the cemetery will seem easy afterwards.
