Default Bike trails / loops in Portland

Hello Portlanders -

I will be visiting your city from Chicago in August for a wedding. I would like to stay on a few days and do some cycling. My plan is to rent a bike and either

1) take a long-ish (~200 miles) one way trip and return via Amtrak or some other method
2) do one big loop - starting and returning in portland
3) do several smallish (~50miles) daily loops

I'm really open to anything - my goal is just to see as much of the Pacific Northwest as possible via bike. I'm just starting to plan - so any advice you can give is appreciated.

Thanks.

John

Without a doubt, the most beautiful way to experience the Columbia River Gorge.

Included is this link; clickable map of Oregon.

Local transit, Trimet, does some runs out to the coast and back.

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The Terrain changes quite a bit and several times between Portland, OR and The Dalles, OR. If you want to get a nice feel for what the Pacific Northwest is about and to be able to go back home and share colorful descriptions with your friends and family, there is no question that the Columbia River Gorge is an excellent option for you.

It indeed looks like a beautiful - not to mention - challenging ride. I think you have convinced me. I was able to find some other loops on that portland online site as well.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm really looking forward to doing this ride!

Will do - would be fun to have company on the ride. Is there transportation available from The Dalles to Portland - or should I plan on doing both to and from on bike? Or do people generally stay overnight and do the return the next day?

I would think locals do an out and back of various sections. I do not know of a transportation service from The Dalles.
Remember the "back" trip is always a new view of where you've been

There are several state parks along the way:

Don't forget to head South out of Portland and take the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway!
