Hello - new to the forum. I am a bike commuter since moving to PDX in 2000.I'm also a photographer and I'm starting a project to document the average bike commuter on any given day. I want the real deal tho, huffing, puffing, wet, sweaty, dry, geared out, in work clothes, etc. the full range.
I pose this question to fellow commuters -would you stop or build 10 minutes into your commute in the morning to be photographed? would it be better to do this on the commute home? I am thinking of a very small $ compensation for those who are photographed, in addition to getting a 8x10 print. I have most of the logistics dialed in except how to get the word out. I have thought about standing on the corner w/ a sign the few days leading up to the actual shooting days. i dont want to hand out anything b/c of the litter factor and general paper waste. i also thought I could post here, possibly craigslist. thoughts? -jim |

Cool project. I'd definitely stop and not ask for compensation. But FWIW you'd be more likely to get me if you'd do a second stop down near Hawthorne....

Cool project +1. I'm willing to participate, but my condition of doing so is that any compensation you give to me instead goes to BikePortland or the BTA. Your choice.

I would totally leave 10 minutes early for that. I would just want a digital copy if possible. No money needed. Let me know~

Sounds Cool... When can you get out to the side of Hwy 217? SB in the AM, NB in the PM.
![]() Paper and Digital would be appreciated! Donate funds to the BTA... Always best to shoot people with cameras! K'Tesh |

thx for the feedback everyone. I'm going to start by doing n.williams/vancouver, if it goes well I'll do other days @ other locations...prolly not 217 tho, sorry. so - if you saw a guy holding a sign that said something like" get your bike commute photo taken HERE tomorrow!" would you respond to that and just show up? it will be pretty obvious whats going on - we'll have lights and an EZ up and some people milling about, etc. I would probably shoot @ each location 2-3 days.

I would. The trick is going to be, when will you be out holding the sign?
What happens if you get too many people at one time?

brewcaster - I would be out there holding the sign the day before @ the time I'd be shooting in the location I'd be shooting. I'd answer questions, wave @ people, etc. then the day of, we'd put the sign like a block down the street to remind people, but as you roll up to the location, you'll see whats going on I'm sure. I've been polling my neighbors and some people @ river city today and the consensus is to do this in the afternoon on the home commute - thus if you had to wait a few minutes it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm sure we'll have a little que going, but nothing I can do about that really.
