How does it sense decceleration? Is it via the movement of hands on the brake levers, or does it actually analyze speed? If it's the former, would this not work for brakeless fixed gear riders?

Really interesting, doubt it would ever catch on though.

From the article:

"How it works

The jacket uses an accelerometer to sense movement, changing the colour of LEDs on the back from green when accelerating, then to red when braking.

A tilt switch in the jacket also makes LEDs in the arm flash amber when the wearer lifts their arm to indicate a turn."

Default accelerometer

from wikipedia:

"An accelerometer is a device for measuring the acceleration and gravity induced reaction forces it experiences. Single- and multi-axis models are available to detect magnitude and direction of the acceleration as a vector quantity. Accelerometers can be used to sense inclination, vibration, and shock. They are increasingly present in portable electronic devices."

Just think if the technology was combined with Mark Allyn's Mark Allyn clothing artist and master of light creations, instead of the dinky little lights suggested in the article.

I got a great feature for the next version of this jacket: a sensor that can tell when cars are getting too close. Then the LED display can show some pre-programmed message like, "BACK OFF A**HOLE" or "IF YOU'RE GONNA RIDE MY A**, YOU BETTER PULL MY HAIR" - or whatever the owner programs in.

Otherwise, it could just cycle through different positive messages, "YOU'D LOOK SEXY IN A HELMET." "IF YOUR WERE ON A BIKE YOU'D BE HAPPY RIGHT NOW" etc...

I guess that could get annoying, huh.

That's a totally sweet idea and if you wear it in the grocery store you will definitely get some looks!
