I just had an idea inspired by a letter to the editor in today's Oregonian by a woman named Kate, from Milwaukie. She advises people to spend their rebate on services so the money stays in the local economy, rather than buying products manufactured overseas. Then, if the service providers spend the money on local products or services, the same money keeps circulating through the local economy and can actually make a difference, at least for a while.
I suggest that bikeportlanders narrow their focus somewhat further and spend a considerable portion of the money on bicycle related services and cycling products made in Portland (or at least on the west coast). [Some research is in order, though, because that former Oregon gem -- Burley -- has been sold and my understanding is that their trailers are now made in Asia.] I was going to put my rebate toward a Gary Fisher Simple City, but now I'm re-thinking that. While some of that money would go to Bike Gallery, the bike is made in China. It also seems to make sense to spread the money out over a month or two, rather than spend it in one chunk, so the economic impact can be felt that much longer. Just a thought. Well, I'm on my way to the handbuilt bike show now to be dazzled by the impressive showings by local craftspeople. Let the dreaming begin! Last edited by Cruizer; 02-09-2008 at 08:45 AM. ooohhhh... Another Wireless TriNewt? Naw, but you can count on part of it being spent on lights/reflective material research (how much can on person/bike have on at a single time?).
