Default Hillsboro, 206th & Amberwood - caution!

I am trying to get the City to do something with a very dangerous situation that a developer keeps putting in the bike lane. An earth moving crew keeps putting 4x12 and various 4x4s in the bike lane to protect the curb when they drive over it.

6 times now I have moved these board and spoke to the city engineer that contacted the owner, who contacted the contractor and all promised it would not happened again. Sure enough, their back turned, two night in a row this same very dangerous situation was put back in the bikelane.

I can just see a peleton of cyclist take a header into this. I think the cost of a curb will be childsplay compared ot the $10M a serious incident could cost the city and the owner.

with intentional bike lane obstructions like those (and sandwich board and construction signs) I move them into the motor vehicle lane that way somebody takes them seriously...

I was tempted in that direction but even that wouldn't get the attention of the city.

I copied everyone I could this morning including the acting city attorney. The only "read" reply I received was the City of Hillsboro Risk Management department.

I posted this here so if anyone has had an incident due to this issue, they can make claims with Hillsboro Risk Management. Hillsboro was made aware of this problem on June 28th, 2012. I would be more than happy to act as a witness.

anybody ever have luck with that? the city laughed at me when I suggested they could be held liable for obstacles reported and left in the road... insurance company likewise laughed and said it's my own fault for not avoiding a stationary object when there were other lanes available...

made sense to me...

don't go faster than you can see...

The city's engineering department got back to me and stated this should not have happened and that all work was suppose to already be done. The engineer went out to the site along with the developer and did a quick survey. They cleaned up the bike lane and neatly stacked the lumber. It was also noted that a steel plate over the sidewalk needed attention for wheelchairs and they put some orange paint on it for the time being.

This is part of a regular training ride so I will certainly stay on top of this. The city engineer was quite appreciative for notifying him of these types of violations. I encourage everyone to pick up the phone when a similar situation arises.
