Default Would I be crazy to bring a bakfiets to Portland?

My husband and I live in the Netherlands, and we're thinking of bringing a bakfiets (cargo bike for holding kids, etc.) with us when we move back to the U.S. (we're planning to move to Portland).

Here's what I mean. It's basically a bicycle SUV:

http://www.bakfiets.nl/eng/models_cargo_bike.php#

Everyone thinks we're nuts for considering this. Here are the concerns we've heard:
- it's heavy, and the most we can get is 8 gears (well, we can get more, but within that range of 8 gears)
- we'd never find a place to repair it
- it would be stolen in 5 minutes

So, are we nuts to be considering this? Are these concerns valid? Thanks for your help!

I have seen something really similar in Portland and Eugene, they are used to carry cargo but the design looks exactly the same. I say bring it, I don't think you will have any problems at all.

i have seen two of these here in town.

you would have zero problems finding someone to tune/maintain/whatever to your bike.

lock it properly.

that bike is awesome.

I think you would be very sane to bring one. In fact, I think if you brought more than one, you'd have buyers very quickly... I have an 8 speed internal hub gear bike, and 8 speeds work just fine. It's not like you're going to be racing around up and down steep hills at high speeds with your kids in the bin, right? I understand that there are bike mechanics in Portland who know what they're doing when it comes to fixing internal hub gear bikes. I have this goal of researching that further and sharing the list, but life keeps interfering. Anyway, go for it! (and let us know when you're in Portland so we can check it out)
