I am taking a job in Salem and would like to bike commute at least one day per week from my home in SE PDX. I know various east side routes from here to there, but I think it may be shorter (and slightly flatter) to go through Newberg. I know how to get to Salem from Newberg, but what is the best way to get to Newberg from Ladd's Addition, assuming I want to avoid the hell that is 99W through Tigard as much as possible? Thanks.

Cecil, that is ambitious, good for you!
I don't have a good route via Newberg, but here's a route i like for getting from Oregon City to Salem, could doubtless be shortened to sacrifice scenery for speed: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...-City-to-Salem Also, Smart Transit runs weekday bus shuttles between Wilsonville and Salem, ($2!) and i'm pretty sure they carry bikes: http://www.ridesmart.com/Routes/Route1X.htm |

Thanks Jonathan - Yes, the job is a great opportunity, even if it will make my commute a little longer - as a state employee I will have access to a commuter bus that goes from PDX to Salem and has storage for a bike, so at the very least I should be able to do a one-way bike commute some days, but I would very much like to round-trip it once a week (and rack up in one day the same amount of miles I ow do in 5 <grin>)
Bikieboy, thanks for the route. I plan to test it out soon and see what I can do with it! |
