TriMet's Cutting Locks Off Bike Racks

Old locks attached to bike racks at Beaverton Transit Center (without bikes) are about to be removed by trimet...


A copy of the warning zip tied and bagged being attached to the locks.

The warnings read:

As a courtesy to other cyclists we provide bike racks for you to use.
You are welcome to use these bike racks when you have a bike
attached to them. Locks, Chains Cables etc. that are attached
without a bike will be removed after 24 hours.
Please be courteous to your other cyclists

I don't mind trimet doing this, if...locks left by people locking their bikes at the racks on a regular basis, are creating a problem the transit agency can't handle in a better, minimally troublesome way. For a long time, I've seen a u-lock attached to a bike rack over at Fred Meyer. It's not interfering with other people continuing to lock their bikes at this rack.

If trimet's concern is an accumulation of abandoned locks gathering on a bike rack to the point the accumulation causes difficulty for other people in using the racks, and if trimet that has no way of determining the ownership of the locks, maybe an affordable registration/permit system for leaving locks at the racks could be arranged.

Or people should make better decisions about storing personal property on someone else's property. This is just lazy cycling.

i'm a pretty jaded/cynical/grumpy dude in a lot of ways but this padlock thing seems cool to me. love is great.

Doesn't someone around here have a flickr page of poorly locked bikes? That Nishiki in K'Tesh' second picture would qualify.

PS - yeah, Caroline has the "How (Not) to Lock your Bike" gallery that I was thinking of. There are others, too.

haha, good catch Alan. That lock could be removed with a couple very common tools.
