Welcome to Portland!
Multhomah Village is a nice place to live, though some day you might want to investigate Southeast. Did your cat make the trip all right? I hope you quickly find a job that you like and that pays sufficiently.

I live in Multnomah Village as well and love it! Can be a bit too hilly at times but couple bike commuting with a little tri-met and you'll be totally fine to do pretty much any commuting you need.
The bike shop at 36th and Multnomah is pretty cool, Dan and Mark are nice guys and should be able to help you find the kind of bike you're looking for if you end up deciding to ditch the mountain bike and go road. Have you discovered John's Market yet? Hope the job hunt turns out for you!

Recommendations for a Commuting Bike...
There's a lot of different opinions on this. I do think a road bike is a good idea. Mudguards and mud flaps are absolutely essential here.
If I had a clean slate and $$$ to work with, I would seriously consider the Trek Portland. The disk brakes mean that you can get away with a lot less cleaning during the winter months, and it comes complete with decent fenders. However, I didn't have a clean slate. I had a 70's vintage UJB crying for some use, so I sank way too many $$$ into it and now it's the love of my life. Oh well, I can still fantasize about a Trek Portland... Quote:

welcome to portland!
if you don't have mad cash to buy a bike, citybikes in southeast portland (on ankeny) is great. they have used road bikes in the $100-$250 range that are lightweight, fast, and great for commuting. i've bought two there (i'd still be riding the first, but it was stolen when i got drunk and left it downtown one night) and my fiance bought his there, and we're both very happy with them.

Just got back from a year in Iraq, and forcing myself to minimize any car use.
My mountain bike sat out in the weather on my balcony all year that I was gone (even after asking the roommate a few times to get a cheap tarp to cover it). 1. Does anyone have recommendations for a shop to get the mt bike fixed up? 2. any beginning biker/newbie courses coming up?

Hi bramasole_iowa! My husband is with the 41st Brigade (was with the 218th pre-deployment) and returned from Iraq in April too. He's usually my mechanic but when he's out of town or I need to get the internal hub on one of my bikes serviced, I take my bikes over to Clever Cycles. I've always been happy with the work they do and I have always had great service. A few months ago I had them do an Xtracycle conversion and when they had an issue with their distributor and didn't get their scheduled shipment on the conversion kits, they bent over backwards to source one from another shop so they could deliver my X on a timely manner.
