Hi, I just moved to Portland and realized quickly that I need a bike. However, I know very little about bikes. I just started researching and I have decided that I need a hybrid or a commuter bike. My budget is $350-450 and I don't mind getting a used bike. One of the bike shops I went to yesterday suggested that I buy a Trek 7.2 FX. Do any of you have any experience with this bike? I don't need a super fancy bike, I will probably use it 2-4 hours a week for getting around and exercising.
If any of you have any advise or suggestions please let me know! ![]()

I've seen some really good prices on new Giant commuters. At Gresham Bicycle they had them at $350.

A first bike should be off craigslist. Then you can sell it for the same you bought it for, after you figure out what you really want.

You might think about renting a bike for a day or so to get a better feel for what you like and what you need. Fat Tire Farm and several other shops offer rentals.
I know their stock is low at the moment, but the Community Cycling Center on Alberta might be a good place to start. They have a lot of experience starting people out on bikes. See you on the road! |

Thank you for your replies! Renting a bike, I like that idea.

Just an update, the CCC has a nice selection of used bikes built up again. There's a very nice looking old 531 steel Trek that caught my eye. Maybe a 520 or 620? Very sweet classic steel ride. It's stylishly built up with upright bars.
