First WA gets the #1 ranking of bike friendly state and now the Premier of BC announces $30 million for bike infrastructure investments.
http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/n...d-95a5858dbbff I'm not sure how this stacks up against funding in OR. The sentence that really caught my eye was this one. "He referred to a European study that indicated government savings of $5 for every dollar spent on bicycling infrastructure." I wonder about the applicability of this study to PDX as it kind of pokes a hole in the "bikes need to pay for the roads" argument heard over and over and over again on the internet. |

Obvious there has to be a point of diminishing returns on such a type of savings, but this implies that bicycling infrastructure is grossly underfunded.
The quandary I am in is that US governments are still firmly on the take from Big Oil and Big Auto. They are almost entirely unwilling to provide the traffic calming measures so common in European cities that simultaneously encourage bicycling and send a strong message that driving your automobile is Really Not Okay. To quote a local cycling activist, "Washington County governments are committed to meeting governmental mandates, but not a penny more." None of the existing mandates have any teeth to discourage people from poisoning our air and water, paying terrorists to kill US soldiers, or reducing their own health care costs by exercising.
