That sounds quite a bit like where I would go. Down 5th to the small paved bike path to Chestnut, left on Cypress instead of Elm, left at Pinehurst, right on Jamieson, right on Scholls, left on SW 92nd then up the Oregon Electric Trail to Oleson, then up Multnomah blvd/Garden Home to Barbur. Of course after that is the semi-psychotic scream down Naito at the split between there and Barbur to get to the Hawthorne directly. Staying on Barbur would be safer to an extent.
