I live in Multnomah Village as well and love it! Can be a bit too hilly at times but couple bike commuting with a little tri-met and you'll be totally fine to do pretty much any commuting you need.
The bike shop at 36th and Multnomah is pretty cool, Dan and Mark are nice guys and should be able to help you find the kind of bike you're looking for if you end up deciding to ditch the mountain bike and go road.
