Yeah, cosmoline, that's the stuff. I believe Weigle's is basically cosmoline in a spray can. Maybe someone even older than me knows better.
(I'm looking forward to getting my biolite to see how...

Framesaver
All my bikes have steel frames and I've treated all of them with this stuff:

It's similar to the stuff they used to use...

Quality vs. price
Lord knows I understand the need to save, but I'll add my two cents. A high quality down bag will last you the rest of your life, if it's not abused. A bag from Western Mountaineering or Feathered...

I ride the NW hills roads frequently too, and I'll echo what other posters said. Going uphill I'm easy to pass, and I stay as far right as I safely can, when I safely can.
Going downhill, I'll...

It's not so open anymore
Tried Larch with some shifties on 3/27. About 3/4 mile from the gate at mile 10, at the switchback, there was snow about 4" deep on the roadway. There was a narrow, slushy car-tire track you could...

Better than nothing
I'd still rather have the morons stopped than witlessly aiming their vehicle at me while they argue with the spouse.

single-speed "conversion"
It's a little involved for a forum post, but basically the steps are:
1. shorten/repair chain with your chaintool (you carry a chain tool, right?).
2. Remove broken derailler and cable.
3....

Single-speed "conversion"
Everyone who rides off-road should know how to convert their bike into a single-speed after wrapping a derailleur...
Only had to do it once, but man I was glad not to be walking the 20+ miles home.

Rules of the game
i haven't ridden College, only Brynwood. I only made it about 60% of the way. BUT... I didn't know it's "legal" to use the drive-ways to get a rest (by circling or track-standing). Now that I know...

cowboy myth
I asked a ranger at Crater Lake once why horses were allowed on some trails, but dogs are banned park-wide. His response was "historical reasons."
In other words, there is no scientifically...

I love my Olympus Stylus 1050 for all outdoor activities. It's waterproof (to 30 feet!), crush- and impact resistant. You can step on it, drop it in puddles and whack it into stuff and it keeps...

Yo roadies, I need a new loop.
I've worn a groove in my standard Kelley Point loop (Skidmore-Williams-Ainsworth-Willamette-Lombard-Marine Drive-33rd-Skidmore). I need a new ride!

ironing for repellency

Heart-rending photo
This isn't graphic, just incredibly sad. Hopefully it can serve as a reminder to all to be careful, attentive, respectful and kind when out on the road.

Higher is better
Generally speaking, spinning a higher gear is preferable to "lugging" a low gear. Start by working on keeping a cadence (rpm) over 80, with your goal being comfortable spinning 95-100.
