Just a note to say I tried the little dirt shortcut at the end of the park the other day, and it works like a champ! I was worried the new construction might have blocked it, but it's a very pleasant...

Columbia Way/Wintler Park in Vancouver
I have always enjoyed riding into Vancouver on the I-5 bridge, and then taking Columbia Way to Riverside to Evergreen. Lately, though, they've put in this horrible massive housing development and cut...

Getting to Banks-Vernonia
Has anyone figured out a decent way to get to the trail from Portland? I'd love to take mass transit to within a few miles of the trailhead, and ride up to Stub, but Tri-Met just doesn't get me close...

Pinhead locking skewers
I use them on my commuter. I had a similar incident where I needed to remove the seat bolt, and I had installed it incorrectly, so I couldn't use the key -- I just cut a groove into the bolt with a...

Locking wheel skewers
Maybe I'm just a sucker, but I use these guys (http://pinheadcomponents.com/) on my commuter bike, so I don't worry too much about losing a wheel... that way I can just lock the frame to a rack. They...

Don't Dig the Armadillos
I put 700x25c Armadillos on my around-town road bike, and it RADICALLY changed the feel of the bike... Yes, they really are extremely puncture-proof, but as someone else said, there must be a happy...

Irritable peds
I passed some peds on one of the uphill dirt paths the other day... a couple of guys with unleashed dogs. I said "on your left," waited for them to get over, and passed slowly, with plenty of room....

I don't think it's that 3-speeds are "inadequate." It's more a question of "Why bother?", especially if you're talking about making new ones. It's not like they're cheaper (than, say, a low-end 3x8...

My two cents
I often use messenger bags to carry way too many groceries... 50-60 lbs. at a time. Even though my Timbuk2 is significantly smaller and holds less than my Chrome, it is much less comfortable with...

Hard to say, exactly -- the confrontation was pretty intense, and I wasn't exactly thinking clearly. Both men were late thirties to early forties, pretty scroungy-looking. Both would probably be...

Bike nearly stolen!
A friend and I were sitting outside at Vincente's at 20th and Hawthorne about an hour ago -- it was still light out. We had our two bikes locked to a standard blue bike rack about twenty feet away. I...
