Portland police respond to report of shots fired at bicyclist in NE Portland

Portland police responded about 4:20 p.m. Monday to a report of shots fired at a bicyclist near Northeast 15th Avenue and Jarrett Street.

Officers said both the man who was the apparent target and the suspect who fired the shots had fled the area by the time they arrived. Police are looking for the suspect, who fled in a vehicle.

Given the information collected at the scene, officers with the Gang Enforcement Team have been called in to investigate.

Streets around the intersection were closed off to traffic as police investigated. Police ask that anyone with information about the incident contact Portland Police.

I think we can expect more of this as bicycling's mode share increases...

these stories certainly aren't going to help get new people in the saddle... we're vulnerable enough out there without having to worry about bullets...

I don't see anything in the linked article that indicates this person was targeted because he was on a bike. Let's not get ahead of the facts here.

that thought never crossed my mind...

what I'm saying is that a car protects you better from bullets...

we're trying to get more people on bikes, and if more everyday people are on bikes then more everyday activities like gang shootings will occur on bikes...

and until bicycles are a respected mode of transport the car crowd will use these negative incidents to keep people off of bikes...

I see this as an issue until bikes are so common that there's no need to mention them in this kind of article...
