SW Taylors Ferry Road

I will very soon be moving to the SW of Portland, in the vicinity of Riverdale High School. I need to commute to the South Waterfront, near the tram terminal, and I've been trying to determine the best cycling route.

Google maps is suggesting that I head down SW Taylors Ferry and connect to the waterfront bike path. This certainly seems the most direct route, but after driving down Taylors Ferry this weekend I'm a little hesitant.

One lane downhill, 40mph speed limit and a marginal shoulder. Would this route be suicidal during rush hour in poor weather? I've spent very little time biking in the SW, but I know it's reputation as the least bike-friendly part of Portland.

Lots of background and discussion on it, too: http://bikeportland.org/tag/river-view-cemetery

If you're comfortable in traffic, going down Taylor's Ferry should be OK. 40 MPH on the bike. Just don't tailgate. Car's can stop faster than bikes when it's wet. Coming up the hill you will want the cemetery route. I've ridden up Taylor's Ferry once and would not recommend it to anyone. I understand there's also a way to weave your way up to Fulton Park/Burlingame area by turning off Taylor's Ferry near the bottom of the hill (1st right past Corbett?), but I've not ridden it yet. Anybody else know that route?

I've taken various routes up on my recumbent trike including taylor's ferry all the way up. The cemetery is much more forgiving in the long run. The intersection at the bottom is a PITA, though.

Thanks for all the info.

Does anyone know if the cemetery route is closed off late at night?

I've also been told about the route through Fulton Park and then down Terwilliger. I may have to check that out on one of my days off as a possible route home after a night shift.

Maybe something like this:

Yes. I think you would need to take La View Dr. or Fulton Park Blvd. off of Terwilliger up to Corbett, then head south to Custer Way and turn right to link up with 5th. I need to explore this. Was not aware there was a link through to Terwilliger without crossing I5 on Brier Place. Thanks!

My understanding is that the cemetery is closed at night.
