Biking from Portland to Forest Grove and back!
 

Hi! I'm new to the forum, but there seem to be a ton of really bike-savvy people here. Awesome!

So, commuters, enthusiasts, cyclophiles... I am seeking a safe, enjoyable, and rather direct route to ride from Portland to Forest Grove and back. This is mostly just for fun, not a commuter route. Google maps says it's a 26 mile (round about) trip one-way, so certainly not out-of-this-world hard. Any suggestions? Obviously, Highway 26 is out-out-out!

I noticed that there were commuters that ride in from Beaverton, I imagine that it would be easy to build upon that commute? What about The Hill? Any good route suggestions for tackling that mighty beast?

I have a couple maps I can send to you (too big to post here); ping me by private e-mail if you're interested.

One of my favorite ways over the West Hills follows the routeof the Worst Day of the Year ride, which takes you through Washington Park and past the zoo. Once you pass the zoo, you tke the frontage roads next to Hwy 26 down to Cedar Mill. Make your way out to Hillsboro and from there, I have some great routes to Forest Grove.

Make sure to stop at Maggie's Buns on 21st Ave near Pacific University in Forest Grove. A great coffee stop and the baked stuff will blowyou away.

Going west out of portland, Goose hollow max stop (dont know the street) Take you up hwy 26 a nice climb do it once just to do it . Used to ride to my night job years ago, I loved to tell people. They thought I was crazy, and they were right.....lol once to the top should be able to get on canyon rd. to beaverton.

Terwilliger is the most scenic route for this trip. Hwy 10 is a wonderful downhill (and a mild uphill for the way back). The tough stretch is getting through Beaverton but once back on TV hwy, you have a straight shot all the way to forest grove (nice wide shoulders on TV hwy). Also consider a few extra miles to do the Hagg Lake route.

I thought there was a bike trail through the hills from portland-proper and hwy 217?

SimNat, there's a path along Hwy 26 between Sylvan & Hwy 217, perhaps this is what yo're referring to? :

for a map, scroll to bottom & open pdf of "new hwy 26 path". Pretty good way to get out Beavertron way, though more of a climb than Barbur/B-H Hwy.

I tried to put you on some lower-traffic roads, once you got past Cornelius Pass. I don't find Canyon Rd/TV Hwy a pleasant place to ride.
