Beaverton/Tigard/Tualatin Daily Commute (via Bull Mountain)
Starting in S. Beaverton area (Scholls Ferry near Murray Hill), I commute to an 8-5, M-F job in Tualatin. I have two basic route options: either a flat route around Bull Mountain via Roy Rogers road to Sherwood/Tualatin, or over the mountain. The over-the-mountain route is safer, and has no high-speed traffic. On the other hand, its an over-the-mountain route. I'd love to have somebody to share motivation with for the top of the route! Hmmm... well, for a more flat route you could go down Scholls to the Fanno Creek Trail, down Tigard St to Main St, and then around Burnham to Hall... But I don't think it's any faster than the route you've already described.
My commute is pretty close to your commute, at least from Gaarde/121st to Durham Rd... It is kinda hilly, but at least on the way in to work it's mostly downhill!
Have you tried going down 99W to 124th and Tualatin Rd?
Or, go all the way down Walnut to Tiedemann, then down Tigard St to Main and all that as described above. It at least cuts out The Wall (aka Gaarde, between Walnut and 121st)... :)
What time do you hit the road? I assume you're leaving your house around 7-ish to get to work and get cleaned up in time for an 8am start... :)
You know, I really don't mind the hills since I have a shower at work. These rides are my only cardio exercise and 16-20 miles a day has helped me lose some weight over the last six months.
I leave between 6:30 and 7:00 most days. I'm an administrative law judge w/ the Oregon Office of Administrative Hearings and my schedule is as regular as clockwork: M-F, 8:00-5:00. I'm inclined to take a break on nice mornings at the wildlife refuge that connects Cook Park in Tigard with the MUP bridge over the Tualatin River. Five minutes to sip some coffee and watch the birds is a nice way to start the day. I sometimes work at home on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. That occurs more frequently in the winter when its dark out for both the morning and evening commute.
I do occasionally take the Roy Rogers route. It's a bit longer (10.5 miles versus 8.5) but is 5-10 minutes faster and considerably easier if I don't push it. I don't mind doing the Fanno Creek route. I've done it a couple of times but find the Cook Park route too pleasant to give up, despite the hills. Variety is nice though.
