Good morning...
New here... and as the screen name suggests- am finally in PDX, after 4 years of planning to move here! Love it!
Looking to buy a used bike... suggestions? Something I can convert from winter to better weather, as a daily commuter...

Best,
B.

I agree.. "shoulda made the move 10 years ago" :)
It's good to be in a place where alternative transportation does not cost you your job! (not that everyone will agree, but compared to where I've been, this is an encouraging atmosphere)

Thanks all! :)

Welcome to Stumptown.

May you live long and ride far.

May you be in Heaven a half hour before the Devil knows you're dead.

A good local bike map can be yours for a measely 6 bucks at Bike Gallery, River City, or numerous shops around town. Worth the investment.

Hey, glad you've chosen to live here. It's a special place, as I think you'll come to discover.

You mentioned that you wanted to buy a used bike. Some good sources are:

Sellwood Cycle Repair - http://www.sellwoodcycle.com
City Bikes - http://www.citybikes.coop
The Recyclery - http://www.therecyclery.com

And of course, there's always craigslist

Good luck, and we'll see you out on the streets!

Thanks Climber.
Actually been here since September, but finally feeling at home, and somewhat settled. :)
I will definitely check out that map. Can't wait to ditch the ride so I can bike.

Thanks Nuovo...
I realized Ptown was where I needed to be when I came off the plane the first time I visited in 2001... couldn't believe it. Spent the last 4 years trying to get everyone else on board to move.
Thanks for the referrals on the bikes. There seems to be good deals on CL, but always worried about thievery! I love local biz so I'll be sure to check out the shops you listed!

Welcome to Bike Town, USA, B. A few weeks ago, I walked into Sellwood Cycle Repair with the intention of buying a used bike. Within 45 minutes of my arrival, I rode out on a brand new Kona mountain bike--at a lower price than I expected to pay for a used one. Don't know much about the Kona brand, but the bike works for me, and it seems to be superior to the old Gary Fisher bike I used to ride. Can't recommend Sellwood Cycle highly enough. If you ride in S.E., especially in the Sellwood area or along that portion of the Springwater Trail, maybe I'll run into you, sometime (figuratively speaking, and hopefully not literally).

So after searching for a bike for a while I found one on CL of all places. checked out the local joints and a few other places a friend back in sf recommended- but this one was the best fit.
Scanned a few boards to make sure it wasn't stolen, and the seller was great.
Picked up the 80s Grizzly this week.
Its a converted 1x1, free hub. Awesome bike. Frame fits me nice... but as usual I want to cut the seat pipe lower ;) I'm little.
gotta grab some gear then i'll be commuting this week.yay!
