Salem Police Launches New Bicycle Registration Program

Salem, OR, April 13 2007, 2006: The Salem Police Department Crime Prevention Unit has developed a program to help bicycle owners keep track of their bikes and make it easier to recover those that are stolen. The Bicycle Registration Program provides bike owners with a registration sticker that is applied to the cycle’s frame. The number is exclusive to the registrant and indicates the bicycle is registered with the Salem Police Department. The registered number is entered into the law enforcement database allowing officer to identify the owner if the bike is located or being ridden by someone other than the owner.

Bicycles are some of the most common items stolen in Salem. Since January 1 of this year, 56 bicycles have been reported stolen. Moreover, there have been over 700 bicycles stolen since 2004 and very few of them returned to the owner. The Crime Prevention Unit has implemented this program to increase the odds of returning a stolen bicycle and arresting the thief.

Enrollment in the program consists of the completion of a simple form with the owner and bicycle’s information and a $2.00 registration fee. Registrants receive a durable, etched tag ready to apply to the bicycle frame. Forms can be picked up at the front counter of the Salem Police Department or visit the police Web page at www.cityofsalem.net.
