I recently was lucky enough to T-Bone the side of a car that failed to stay stopped at a stop sign. I was going west on Madison, down the hill, doing about 25mph. I was in the middle of my lane of traffic trying to be visible... then blam! I wasn't visible enough. Five feet doesn't cut it for stopping distance so I went "superman" over the car. My bike was totalled (getting a new one from the insurance though) somehow I walked away. I flew and landed just right (about 15-20 feet away), I banged up and cut my left leg on my handle bars, other than that I ended up fine.
Things to keep in mind while commuting:
Where a helmet.
We are harder to see, no matter what.
When crashing; tuck and roll, don't stick your arms out.
Ride safe.
