View Full Version : Any ideas for broken helmet?

01-27-2007, 08:02 PM
This past week I took a nice slide on some ice rounding a corner and fractured my helmet. Now it's time to buy a new one, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what to do with the old one. It is still intact, but has a hairline fracture from the outside to one of the vents. My best idea is to turn it into a hanging 'basket' for a plant. Any better ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I have made several into hanging flower and plant pots, they work great.

I use them to make big head masks. I make a giant paper mache' head and then mount the helmet inside I usually make it so I can see out the mouth. hanging basket sounds like much less work. :)

You could throw it away.

Yeah, but if you throw it away, that foam is likely going into a landfill for the next 100 years.

Use it for packing material?

Any photos of those masks to share?

the mask idea is great. i've always wanted to be medusa for halloween, but couldn't figure out how to configure the snakes. the helmet i've been too hippie to discard will be perfect!

I donated my old cracked helmets to a bike safety group (WashCo BTC) for demonstration purposes... (take a helmet put it on a melon, whack the thing w/a bat... then repeat w/o the helmet...

Take it over to the Lloyd Center ice rink and sell it as a rump protector?

Contact the manuf. Sometimes they're interested in taking the old helmet (sometimes offering a discount on a replacement, too) so they can analyze the damage for research in improving the next product. :)
